China — willing to pay any price for coal — threatens world's fuel supply

The dirtiest fossil fuel, which was struggling against cleaner energy sources, is now seeing its biggest comeback ever

China will expand coal procurement at “any price to ensure heating and power generation in winter,” the China Electricity Council said in a statement on Monday. While more than 90 per cent of the fuel the country uses is mined locally, it’s difficult to raise local output at short notice.

https://financialpost.com/commodities/energy/chinas-coal-shortage-means-higher-prices-for-the-whole-world

Coal is not King in China. It is the Joker. When the Party cut off imports of coal from Australia it basically shot itself in the foot. It could not instantly become self-sufficient in coal.

The open question is whether Australia will pull a Canada. When China cut off imports of canola from Canada then Canada went ahead (under Chrystia Freeland whose family has a canola business) to go through a middle-man in the Middle East to sell canola to China. At the time, my recommendation to the Canadian government was to cut-off direct and indirect exports of canola to China for a period of twenty-five years. We don't want to be held hostage again to export threats and bullying by China.

The author also stated the obvious. Canada must work in concert with Australia with respect to commodities. China is playing Canada and Australia against each other. For both Canada and Australia--together is better.

One doesn't encourage China to get off of coal to reduce global warming by selling it more coal at a higher price. It will simply encourage China to develop its own internal coal supply in the long run. As a matter of fact, I remember someone in China (who shall go unnamed) recently saying that China will not open new mines in the West. That was simply a bargaining ploy in light of the energy crisis in China so that it could import more coal.

Therefore, reduce or eliminate coal exports to China. Do not increase them. Put import taxes on Chinese products that are dependent on energy from coal. Of course, leaders don't rule in the West. Greed rules.

You may also want to consider that as long as China has an energy crisis it will not invade Taiwan.  It's time the Canadian government thinks strategically. Unfortunately, it doen't think at all.

Trudeau didn't use the word "China" in his stump speeches, debates, townhalls or policies in a hastily called election. Why?  Well, let's begin with the fact that only 14% of Canadians support his China policy. The Chinese authorities call him "running dog".  Kovrig and Spavor were in Chinese prisons. Over 27,000 Canadians were killed in Canada from COVID-19 since it was "imported" from China.

Sun Dawu: Fully delegate power and dare to take responsibility!

2020-08-15 Dawu Heritage

I had to learn a poem from the "Book of Songs" when I was young. When a newly married woman entered the yard of her husband's house, she found pigs running around in the yard. The newlyweds said: "How can you let pigs run around the yard? Get all the pigs in a circle." Everyone laughed at her, saying that she had started to take care of her affairs before she even entered the door.

I think this bride is not in place, and the thoughts are in place. Although she has just entered the door and has not yet formally visited the house, her heart has already entered the house, and she has begun to deal with things from the perspective of a housewife. This is the manifestation of the sense of ownership.

Only those who dare to bear the responsibility will fight for power and use power appropriately. The "struggle for power" mentioned here is not usurpation of power. Usurpation of power is to take improper means to seize power from those in power. This is not the case when fighting for power is a kind of responsibility.

There are sayings in traditional culture that "the humble position does not dare to forget about the country" and "the rise and fall of the world is the responsibility of everyone." Those with noble ambitions, even if they are humble and live in distress, still worry about the world and hope to contribute to the country. The same is true in the enterprise. An employee with a low position and low income can be a promising person if he can worry about the entire group. Even if what he does is small, he is determined to be lofty, which is remarkable. If the enterprise fully delegates power to such employees, he will dare to make ideas, dare to take responsibility, and make more contributions to the enterprise.

Sun Dawu: Fully delegate power and dare to take responsibility!
When an enterprise is decentralized, it is very important for employees to dare to use power, because when using power, one must bear responsibility, and when assuming responsibility, there is a risk that they may be criticized for making mistakes in decision-making. The correct approach is to dare to use power. Even if things are done wrong and criticized by the leader, they have enough psychological endurance and self-improvement to make power better and better. This is not easy. There used to be a cadre in the group who bought a desk for more than 8,000 yuan. The leader said a few words, but he waved his hand and left without even saying hello. Such a person, how much power you give him, he can't use it well.

Dawu Group's full decentralization is successful. One is because the company dares to delegate power, and the other is that there are a group of employees who dare to use power, assume responsibility, and improve themselves. I hope that the cadres and employees of our company can take the initiative to fight for power and make more decisions.

The group has an unwritten rule that when subordinates ask their superiors for instructions, if the subordinates do not give their opinions, the superiors will not make a statement. In fact, this is also to encourage the subordinates to make the decision on their own, dare to take the responsibility, and those who are on the front line, their handling opinions are often the best opinions and the best decisions. Take service as an example. People on the front line know best whether they should give guests a fruit plate or give them a free order.

If our employees dare to take the responsibility and treat the company as their own home, it means to delegate power to them. They are also reluctant to give others free bills. They will find a way to deal with the problem. Why is it to find a way instead of dealing with the problem in accordance with the rules and regulations? Because the service is not mechanical, but flexible, it is difficult to regulate the handling of certain specific affairs by clear provisions, and it is more dependent on human experience and understanding.

In the past, many well-known catering establishments used their masters to lead their apprentices. The masters used words and deeds to teach their apprentices, so that they could learn how to serve their guests.

After the decentralization of the enterprise, there may be two problems. One is that employees dare not take responsibility; the other is that after the decentralization, employees pay too much attention to the interests of the enterprise because of their attachment to the enterprise. .

The first problem is that employees don’t dare to take responsibility. The performance is that it’s nothing to do with them. This is a manifestation of employees' lack of ownership.

The second question is that employees dare to take responsibility, but he is more deadly than the manager and the factory director. For example, if there is a hair in the dish, he is reluctant to change one to the customer, and even argue with the customer. In our companies, this phenomenon is not uncommon. For example, some units have just introduced preferential policies, or the prices of products have been reduced, and some salespersons believe that anyway, customers don’t know, so they sell them to customers at the original price. The practice is very bad. Now that the preferential policy has been introduced, it must be put in place so that customers can enjoy this preferential treatment. This is the way our company operates.

I think that when our waiter presents a fruit plate or even a free order to the customer, there must be a problem with a certain service, but they have restored the impact of the lack of service through the gift plate and free order, and the company's profit is the largest of. If there is no waiver that should be waived, this person may affect ten customers. If there are really waivers that shouldn’t be waived, the guests won’t eat you for nothing, that is, how much loss can the guests have if they eat for nothing? It is by no means wise to make customers feel that they have suffered a loss in our enterprise. On the contrary, only with more atmosphere and more benefits for customers, our road will become wider and wider.

The poet is reminded of Odysseus's return home as he confronts the suitors.

The following essay appeared briefly on the poet's site just before the website was discontinued. If you missed it then you might wish to become familiar with its content.

Sandglass

From Infinity to Time as Measured by a Sandglass

The Mandate of Heaven was a compact between the people of the Zhou Dynasty (1046 BCE-256 BCE) and the supreme god. It conferred legitimacy on the Zhou ruler. The ruler was bound to uphold harmony and honor within the empire. The Zhou was the longest lasting dynasty at 790 years.

The Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 BCE) was the second longest imperial dynasty at 422 years. The Four Seas (四海) concept was a pre-Han Dynasty belief which was held since at least the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty. However, the Han Dynasty defined it more clearly and expanded upon the concept. The seas included the East China Sea, South China Sea, Lake Balkash as the West Sea and Lake Baikal as the North Sea.

Today, China's offshore Four Seas are the Bohai, Yellow, East China and South China. It was announced on November 28, 2011 that military exercises were held near the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, East Sea, in the north Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. The exercises continue to the present time.

The most disputed area with respect to legal rights pertains to the South China Sea. On September 25, 2017, China announced a claim called the Four Sha” (四沙 meaning four sand). It extends sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction to the island groups called Dongsha, Xisha, Nansha, and Zhongsha.

The poet is reminded of the "X" symbol in the middle of the ruler on the Selden Map. It resembles infinity. The symbol is employed by the poet on both the Northwest Rectangle (Silk Road trade routes) and expanded Illustration D (includes Maritime Trade Routes) to define the extent of Chinese territory based in part on the old and modified concept of Four Seas during the Han Dynasty. The horizontal infinity symbol represents an unlimited period of time.

With respect to the human time span one might consider the period from the Zhou to the Qing Dynasty which is exceedingly long. However, if the infinity symbol is turned so that it becomes vertical it resembles a sandglass or hour glass. It measures short periods of time. For example, the shift for a Chinese sailor during the Ming Dynasty as measured by a sandglass was two and a half hours or one tenth of the day. Therefore, the shift from what had been the Nine Dash Line to a shifting sands Four Sha claim seems to be equivalent to that of a sandglass with respect to time. It is short and rather fleeting compared to the longer 2957 year period from Zhou to Qing which involved both the Mandate of Heaven compact and the Four Seas concept.

However, the Chinese government and Communist Party is officially atheist. They have connected the Four Seas which are adjacent to China. Since the South China Sea links the Pacific and Indian Oceans it then becomes part of the One Belt One Road plan which is an expanded view of Xi Jinping Thought. One Belt One Road has been renamed the "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI) which is intended to join China with more than 100 countries through railroad, shipping and energy projects.

The BRI may be regarded as a grandiose scheme. Historically speaking, how have grandiose schemes fared in Chinese history? Qin Shi Huangdi (秦始皇) was the first emperor of a united China. In the North, he built the precursor of the Great Wall to defend the Qin state from the Xiongnu and in the South he built the Lingqu canal to transport supplies to the army. He was unable to secure an elixir of life from the island of Zhifu which has since joined the mainland by sand and soil of the sea's floor. His Plan B was to build a tomb and 35 to 60 kilometer square necropolis for the afterlife. The Qin Dynasty (秦朝) was one of the shortest since it lasted only fourteen years from 221 BCE-206 BCE.

Then there was the Yongle Emperor (永樂帝) who was the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty. He reigned from 1402 CE-1424 CE. He called for a massive reconstruction of the Grand Canal. He also continued the building of the Ming Great Wall as a defensive measure and to protect his tomb. The Forbidden City of the new capital of Beijing took years to build at great expense. The inauguration took place on February 2, 1421. On May 09, 1421 the Forbidden City was struck by lightning. The fire burned down the Hall of Great Harmony, Central Harmony and Preserving Harmony. The Emperor lost the Mandate of Heaven.

Before the fire, the emperor had sponsored ZHENG He's sixth expedition of nine-masted treasure ships which sailed on March 03, 1421. The main purpose of the Treasure Fleet was to display Chinese might in order to secure tribute as early as 1409. A fleet of smaller vessels had sailed down the Sungari and Amur Rivers to Telin (特林) where the poet argues the Peng is located and the boundary of the Empire. The expenditures of the construction projects and the Treasure Fleet as well as ill-fated military expeditions left the empire in poor financial straits.

The main problem with the grandiose Belt and Road Initiative (involving the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road) is that there is no clear idea of its cost, timeline or extent. The cost estimates vary from $1 trillion to $8 trillion. The Center for Strategic and International Studies said in 2018 that China's trillion dollar infrastucture promise may not be met for several years. The main danger to the program seems to be inflated expections--especially if $8 trillion promises are touted as they have been by commentaries in the Hong Kong Economic Journal and mirrored by the Asian Development Bank. One might say that inflated promises of spending encourage countries to curry favour with China in order to secure funding. Is currying favour not the equivalent of paying tribute?

The China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has taken part in BRI projects. It is said to be "the fulcrum of China’s BRI ambitions". Five of its entities have been placed on The Entity List of The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). The BIS placed restrictions on the companies which enabled the People's Republic of China to reclaim and militarize disputed outposts in the South China Sea.

Illustration D
The Selden Map is provided courtesy of the Bodleian Library for educational purposes only

The poet is revisiting an image revealed to him on February 11, 2017 in order to make a descriptive comment on it. The image is superimposed on The Selden Map of the seventeenth century. It may surprise the reader to realize that he/she is viewing a poem. It is a poem of D. Carlton Rossi. It is a poem in the style of Poetic Analytic Imagery or to be specific Poetic Analytics of Imagery through Streams of Consciousness and Unconsciousness.

In this case, the poem is called Illustration D because the poet actually did not want to name it more specifically or for that matter describe it. He wanted the onlooker to see it without interpretation much as one would look at a painting in an art gallery or without commentary as one would read a poem.

An exception is made to the rule at this time because on The Selden Map he is now contrasting an unnamed poem involving a sandglass with a new poem involving the infinity sign. In other words, a rectangle is divided by an X into four parts. The infinity sign is horizontal and the sandglass sign is vertical stressing two different concepts of time and space. These signs are within Illustration D.

The viewer may appreciate the beauty of the geometric form evidenced in the illustration. Basically, it shows the Mandate of Heaven in the Middle Kingdom around 1619; that is, the relation of heaven, man and earth. More practically, it shows maritime trade routes complimenting older Silk Trade Routes on land. The emphasis though is on Beijing rather than Xian which was highlighted in an image poem called North-West Rectangle.

A brief description of Illustration D follows. The most important vertical line goes through the middle of the horizontal infinity symbol and the vertical sandglass sign. It also goes upward through a large yellow square.  In the center of the large square is the smaller square. At its bottom is Beijing and within it is the Forbidden City and within it is the Temple of Heaven and within it is the Observatory near which sacrifices were made.

The small square is superinposed on another image. It is an outline of the Emperor dressed in Ming Dynasty style attire . As far as the poet knows he is the only one who has seen this hidden image. It is an image of the Emperor blowing the wind. Beijing is located in the Cap of the Emperor. It may be imagined that the Emperor is protected by the wall around the Forbidden City and one can see the Great Wall which protects China at the top of the Cap.

The line then continues north or upwards through the smaller infinity sign in the middle of the ruler. It progresses onward to the North Circumpolar Rectangle or Polar Quadrilateral. At the top of the large yellow square is the yellow rectangle (NCR). At the top of the square and rectangle is the center of the compass.  It represents the location of Draconis A (an ancient Pole Star).

At the top, left-hand corner of the large square the poet has identified the Yanran Inscription within an horizontal rectangle. It marks a major victory of the Han over the Xiongnu Confederacy in 89 CE. The line then goes through the point at the center of the compass. It then goes eastward to the middle of the vertical rectangle representing the void. In other words, the importance of a major victory is contrasted with the unimportance of nothingness.

A poetic interpretation of The Selden Map through geometric form is relevant today. It defines the historical boundaries of modern China. Generally speaking, the Four Seas of the Han Dynasty mark the North, South, West and East boundaries of the Empire as defined in Illustration D and as explained in the poet's thesis called The Selden Poems. This illustration may or may not provide historical justification for China's claim to some or all of the South China Sea through either force or discourse based on the harmony of heaven, mankind and earth as a moral or legal imperative. However, it acts as an historical reference and guide for all parties.

The map itself is named after John Selden who wrote the draft for Mare Clausum or the closed sea in 1618 and the final version in 1635. He attempted to prove that the sea was "in practice virtually as capable of appropriation as terrestial territory." In the area of the South China Sea it contrasts to the Dutch East India Company's claim to an open sea enforced in 1619 with their seizure of the Javanese city of Jayakarta. The doctrine of the open sea was promulgated by Hugo Grotius in his Mare Liberum (1609) with respect to the Dutch involvement in the West Indies.

Picture
Illustration E

The poem called Illustration E is a refinement of Illustration D.  The compass rose  is now circled in yellow as if if it were the Sun. This acts as a counterpart to the square below.  It suggests the circle could be theoretically squared.

One may also conjecture that the small yellow circle within the compass represents Draconis 11 while the small circle at the bottom of the yellow square represents Draconis 10. These small circles are the Pole Star and its binary companion respectively. The poet contends there were actually two Pole Stars. They rotate around a common barycenter.

Wuhan scientists planned to release coronavirus particles into cave bats,  leaked papers reveal

The Telegraph

Sarah Knapton

September 21, 2021

Wuhan and US scientists were planning to release enhanced airborne coronavirus particles into Chinese bat populations to inoculate them against diseases that could jump to humans, leaked grant proposals dating from 2018 show.

New documents show that just 18 months before the first Covid-19 cases appeared, researchers had submitted plans to release skin-penetrating nanoparticles and aerosols containing “novel chimeric spike proteins” of bat coronaviruses into cave bats in Yunnan, China.

They also planned to create chimeric viruses, genetically enhanced to infect humans more easily, and requested $14 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) to fund the work.

Papers, confirmed as genuine by a former member of the Trump administration, show they were hoping to introduce “human-specific cleavage sites” to bat coronaviruses which would make it easier for the virus to enter human cells.

WHO scientist wants closer look at Wuhan lab that moved days before COVID-19 outbreak

New York Post

By Natalie O'Neill

August 13, 2021 4:46pm Updated

A Wuhan lab that was quietly moved by Chinese officials in December 2019 — drawing scrutiny from a World Health Organization scientist — operated under a mild safety level protocol where workers weren’t necessarily required to wear masks, officials said in reports.

At least one employee of the Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention facility — different than the city’s much-discussed Wuhan Institute of Virology — tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies due to “a family cluster transmission,” though it’s unclear when the tests were conducted, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a World Health Organization report.

The lab, where Chinese scientists research mild human diseases with bats, was moved near the seafood market where the first COVID-19 cases were found just days before the outbreak, WHO investigators said.

The revelation comes as Dr. Ben Embarek, the Danish head of a WHO-led team of investigators that probe the viruses’ origins, said in an interview this week that more information is needed about the lab’s move.

“It’s interesting that the lab relocated on the 2nd of December 2019: That’s the period where it all started,” Embarek, a food safety and animal diseases expert, said in a documentary that aired on the Danish television channel TV2.

“We know that when you move a lab, it disturbs everything…That entire procedure is always a disruptive element in the daily work routine of a lab,” he said.

https://nypost.com/2021/08/13/who-scientist-eyes-on-wuhan-lab-that-moved-before-pandemic/

The Wuhan CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) was a separate lab from the Wuhan Virology Institute. They were both located closely together in a less populous area.  The Wuhan CDC  was a  level 2 lab with lower security level  than the level 4 biohazard lab of the Wuhan Virology Institute which handled  the most dangerous viruses.

Why was the Wuhan CDC Level 2 Institute moved on December 2, 2019?   There is some circumstantial evidence in terms of satellite surveillance of hospital parking lots that there was something unusual going on as early as mid-November with respect to attendance and/or admittance at the hospitals.  This may have been due to what became known as COVID-19.

Why was the Wuhan CDC Level 2 Institute moved to its present location in Wuhan. The answer is that it is closer to the Wet Market. One may assume that both purchases and sales of live animals were done at the market.

It is difficult to undertand though why the CDC Level 2 Institute was moved to a high density location in terms of population rather than to a more remote area. It couldn't be solely because of close proximity to a Wet Market for sake of convenience. One may conjecture that it was where there were more medical facilities with isolation units to handle an outbreak of COVID-19 which had already begun.

Would the relationship between the Wuhan CDC Level 2 Institute and the Wuhan Virology Institute have necessitated a move? This is a distinct possibility if the move was intended to curtail or cut-off the spread of a virus from a Level 2 to a Level 4 facility.  One may assume that safety procedures at the Level 4 facility were were intensified even if procedures at the Level 2 facility may have been temporarily compromised in a potentially unplanned and quick move to downtown Wuhan. It may be also that the Level 2 facility was designated as the sole institution to contact with the Wet Market.

Separated from his parents, an infected 4-year-old highlights the human cost of China's zero-Covid policy

By Nectar Gan and Steve George, CNN

September 17, 2021

Covered from head to toe in a white hazmat suit, a small child carrying a backpack half the size of his body toddles down a hospital corridor and arrives at a CT scan room -- all by himself.
"A 4-year-old boy has been infected (with Covid-19), unfortunately," a caption in the video reads. "No accompanying parents. Going to quarantine alone."
The scene, captured by a nurse at a quarantine hospital in the city of Putian, the epicenter of China's latest Delta variant outbreak, gripped millions of people when it went viral on Chinese social media this week.

Chinese property giant Evergrande warns again that it could

default on its enormous debts

By Michelle Toh and CNN's Beijing bureau, CNN Business

Updated 6:32 AM ET, Tue September 14, 2021

Evergrande is once again warning that it could default on its huge debts as it struggles to cut costs or find anyone to buy some of its assets.

The embattled Chinese property giant has already warned in recent weeks of its cash crisis, listing $300 billion in total liabilities and saying that it could default if it's unable to raise money quickly.

Should that happen, the effects would be felt across China's banking system and the wider economy. The group has already suspended work on some projects as it tries to conserve cash, a move that's poised to hit China's property sector.

Hundreds of investors showed up at Evergrande's offices on Sunday to demand a meeting with a company executive, according to Chinese news outlet Caixin. Reuters reported similar scenes on Monday, with about 100 protesters on scene.

Does Evergrande Represent China's Lehman Brothers Moment?

The vast empire of the developer Evergrande Group is crumbling and could collapse; what chunk of the homebuilding industry might it take with it?

Alex Frew McMillan

September 15, 2021

China's housing ministry has told major banks that Evergrande will not be able to make loan interest payments due on Sept. 20, Bloomberg reports here on Wednesday.

Ironically, it is the likely lack of government intervention that is of greatest concern. Beijing has inserted itself into a lengthening list of industries -- digital payments, videogames, e-cigarettes, for-profit tutoring, ride hailing, grocery delivery, to name just a few -- with market-moving regulatory changes, sprung without warning. But it is adopting a hands-off approach to the property industry that may see the Chinese leadership willing to let Evergrande go under.

It would be a warning to property tycoons across China, at a time Chinese President Xi Jinping says it is time to redistribute China's wealth away from the rich. Evergrande's founder, Hui Ka-yan (who goes by Xu Jiayin), was in 2017 rated the richest man not just in China but all of Asia. Forbes pegged his wealth at US$42.2 billion, which has now fallen to US$11.4 billion in its real-time ranking.

Though a CCP member and professed socialist, Sun believed in the capacity of the Chinese people to work for themselves. The backwardness and poverty of the countryside, he frequently argued, had little to do with the inability of China’s farmers to turn profits, but stemmed from the preponderance of crushing government regulations and taxes.

Speaking with the Chinese-language Epoch Times, Wang lamented that the Party saw people like Sun, “who have ideals and create prosperity for the people,” as enemies. “These people are society’s conscience, and they are hard to find. It is they who lead society forward.” But the CCP “is practicing totalitarianism, it is going backward, so any force that stops this backsliding will be increasingly suppressed and destroyed.”

For Cao, the Dawu Group’s accomplishments show “what a private citizen and a private company can do for the country, for a place, and for the people with a little freedom and policy support from the government. But I’m afraid, politically, that’s exactly where the CCP now sees danger,” Cao, the editor of China Change, wrote.

Sun had said in his numerous speeches that China’s countryside had no shortage of talent, labor, capital, or markets; only a lack of freedom.

One reason Dawu Group was successful was that it stressed self-suffiency. The concept of self-sufficiency matches Xi Jinping's goal for the country. One problem with the Dawu Group model may have been that it was too self-sufficient in that it did not rely enough on government.  For example, it may have been "out of sync" with government regulations in some areas. Sun Dawu has conceded as much.

As a result, a dispute arose in the summer of 2020 between Dawu Group and a state-owned organ known as Xushui State Farm. At other times it is referred to as Baoding State Farm so the author is not exactly sure who the owners are.  To use a bodily reference, Xushui State Farm might be considered to be the equivalent of a vestigial organ such as an earlobe.

The local regulatory, administrative issues assumed national, political  importance on the 100th anniversary of the CCP.  In fact, it was reported at one point that prosecutors wished to hold the criminal trial of Dawu Group's employees on July 1, 2021 in Baoding or when the Chinese Communist Party was celebrating at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Were they just trying to curry favour with the leader  at the expense of national issues such as alleviation and elimination of poverty,  redistribution of weath and achievement of common prosperity?

Picture
Mao Tse-tung introduced the concept of "common prosperity" in 1953. In 1958, he visited Xushui District, Hebei Province to better understand the situation of the peasants and to promote the Great Leap Forward. Today, it seems that more understanding of the state-organ known as Xushui State Farm and Dawu Group is required by the national leadership if it wishes to promote "common prosperity" in the rural areas of China.  Is "common prosperity" furthered with the imprisonment of Dawu Group executives and with the local government takeover of a thriving agricultural enterprise which serves the people? Dawu Group is not only now "run" by the local government, but is being "run down" by it.  Is this the model of "common prosperity" for the rural areas of China?  The peasants, farmers and migrants might think differently.  It may be time for another visit to Xushui District by the national leadership if it wishes to follow in the steps of Mao Tse-tung.

Not many people were able to read the following analysis written a couple weeks after the arrest of Sun Dawu in the year 2020. The reason was that my SSL certificate required a double rekeying procedure which the provider was unwilling to facilitate.  At any rate, it was only a minor set-back in the grand scheme of things.

The Arrests of Sun Dawu (孙大午)

In 2003, the arrest of SUN Dawu, his two brothers and a few others along with the author who was detained on house arrest made international headlines. The world found out what happened and why in a small village in rural China. On November 11, 2003, Sun Dawu abandoned his appeal to the charges of illegal fundraising and his probation began. To some degree it's been repeated, but most things have now changed whether they are of subtle or substantial nature.

Recently, Sun Dawu and his brothers were detained on November 11, 2020. The seventeen year anniversary to the day is no coincidence and taints any notion of impartiality. However, today, it is now much more personal. His wife was detained, his two sons were detained, his daughter-in-laws were detained and his oldest grandson was detained. It is basically an insult to and assault of the Confucian family whose very existence is threatened by the Communist Party of China.

To put it bluntly, it is an extreme form of hostage diplomacy. While in prison awaiting trial in 2003 there were threats made to Sun Dawu to admit guilt about illegal deposit taking. He agreed to be silent in court. However, at trial he was presented with Dawu Group's "IOU" which was identified as a "voucher of deposit" for illegal fundraising. He responded by saying "I typed an IOU, not a deposit slip. Are you illiterate?

Needless to say the prosecutor went bananas. The Chief Prosecutor said "Sun Dawu! You are still talking! You must know that your wife is at large, your two brothers are still in the detention center, and there are two more than 80-year-olds in your family..." That declaration by the Chief Prosecutor should have ended the trial at that very moment thereby freeing Sun on a mistrial, but it didn't.

The manner in which the arrests were conducted in 2003 and 2020 are very telling. Their unusual nature speaks volumes. On May 27, 2003, Sun Dawu was invited as a ruse to a dinner party held by the newly appointed county party secretary in Xushui County. It was held at the Hongyan Hotel. Deceptively, he was arrested as a dinner guest. This deception is one of the most egregious insults and acts of perfidy to a guest with regard to Chinese custom and Confucian values.

Sun Dawu's name means the Great Noon. Traditionally, Noon is the start of the day for Chinese. However, police forces chose the end of the day or midnight for their special operations police action. This procedure is highly unusual with respect to the detention of the family for what might be civil charges concerning property issues. Civil charges can transform into criminal charges with uncommon ease when the CCP controls the courts through "rule by law".

Inexplicibly, Xushui County police forces or the local ones did not conduct the arrests of the family. The arrests were undertaken by the Public Security Bureau of Hebei Gaobeidian City One must speculatively assume that the decision to use this bureau was at the provincial level. One might also assume that if there is a trial the Sun family will not be judged by their peers but rather outsiders. Finally, it might be guessed that the local public security bureau might anticipate strong local support for Sun Dawu as was forthcoming in 2003 so they have moved the potential venue of trial.

The force used by the police was tantamount to a break-in by a police-state. Three hundred police arrived in six buses to arrest sleeping family members. To the midnight break-in the police brought their dogs to intimidate. They brought their submachine guns as an expression of over-whelming force. They brought terror to instill fear in those who support rule of law and human rights.

                                       Fearful Symmetry

The author is rather surprised at the continuing naivety of government authorities in Canada. They talk about hostage diplomacy with regard to a link between the Spavor-Kovrig cases and that of the Meng Wanzhou case. It seems however that they learned nothing from the earlier Garratt case in terms of hostage diplomacy of Canadian citizens by Chinese authorities which directly involved Chinese-Korean relations. It should be noted that Kovrig was an expert of the Korean Peninsula while Spavor was a businessman in North Korea. Both were arrested in China.

To support his view the author quotes from his April 03, 2019 paper called "The absurdity of the Liberal Government's China Policy and Strategy as it pertains to Canola". One needs to put the present into perspective by examining the past. On June 28, 2014, SU Bin--who was a permanent resident of Canada--was arrested for cyberespionage against Amercian military contractors with the theft of hundreds of thousands of files. Kevin Garratt who is a Canadian was arrested in China on August 4, 2014 in a tit-for-tat response and later charged with espionage. There was no foundation for the charges against Garratt. One might even call them absurd. Garratt didn't report to CSIS, but rather to God. He was held as a bargaining chip.

More fundamentally, though, Canadian authorities have not understood the phenomenon of "hostage diplomacy" as it has been applied internally and domestically in China. For example, the author is aware of a personal story of a Renmin University student at Tiananmen Square in 1989. He was one of the 1,000,000 students who were involved in the demonstration known as the June 4 Fourth Incident in China The national movement was called the 89 Democracy Movement The student caught the attention of Chinese authorities who limited his influence by stealing his sandals. As a result, he had to visit the infirmary of the hospital to get treatment for his blistered feet. They wanted to detain him on the second floor, but he climbed down the outside of the building to secure his freedom. The police couldn't find him; so, they arrested his father at his village thousands of miles away in the countryside. This forced the student to give himself up to police. The above example is a domestic case of hostage diplomacy. His father had nothing to do with his son's behavior; but, nevertheless, he was arrested so that they could target his son.

There was an instance of hostage diplomacy in the May 27, 2003 arrest of Sun Dawu (孙大午). The government's main target was Sun Dawu both because of his public statements at Beijing universities and because of his application of innovative financing in the grey area which competed against monopolistic banking concerns. Basically, authorities arrested his two brothers as hostages to bend Sun Dawu's will. Furthermore, they tried to arrest his wife, but she escaped in the trunk of a car.

A similar kind of situation transpired on November 11, 2020. Again, the target was Sun Dawu. This time all his family was arrested who were involved in the private, family business called Dawu Group making his grandchildren legal orphans. His lawyers continue to have concerns about the threat of gang charges being levied which could mean the legal seizure of his business. Virtual extortion may go hand-in-hand with virtual kidnapping.

Let's also not forget possible charges involving "foreign forces" which were first expressed around Tomb Sweeping Day on April 4, 2021. This charge might actually involve the author. Imagine, a poet as a foreign force! All the poet can say to the charge is "Vergiß die alten Freunde nicht" from the title of a poem by Leonard Cohen.

It is of significance that Sun Dawu's wife Liu Huiru and daughters-in-law Zhang Yuan and Ma Xiaochen were charged with “illegally absorbing deposits from the public” in a separate case. The defence argues the following. "The case was returned by the Gaobeidian People’s Prosecutorate to Gaobeidian Public Security Bureau for supplementary investigation. That’s the only charge against these women, and their so-called “criminal offense” involves nothing but providing personal bank accounts to Dawu Group, which is not a crime at all. What the Gaobeidian Prosecutorate is doing is holding these women as de facto “hostages” as a way to dismiss the defense lawyers’ motion against bringing separate charges against them." 1.

The Dawu Group was actually founded by Sun Dawu's wife. The year was 1985. It grew from a few chickens and pigs to an agricultural enterprise. However, the enterprise suffered a devastating blow some eighteen years later when its management led by Sun Dawu and his two brothers were arrested in 2003 on charges of illegal fund-raising.

It is commonly known that Sun Dawu was released on October 30, 2003 when he returned home at the time of his father's birthday (Sun Kai). However, what has been forgotten is that his probation formally began on November 11, 2003 when he dropped his appeal to the charges of illegal fundraising.

November 11th therefore takes on special meaning because that was the anniversary of the day on which Sun Dawu and his family were arrested in a massive sweep of Dawu Group. The date is informally known as 被捕11112020.    It is no coincidence that Sun Dawu was arrested on November 11, 2020 or the anniversary to the day on which his probation began on November 11,2003. It is a political statement which is intended to convey that Sun Dawu learned nothing with respect to illegal fund-raising as well as the other charges. Nothing could be further from the truth;  for example, he designed the Private Entrepreneurial Constitutional System in 2004.

The sentence of Sun Dawu was announced on July 28, 2021 or in the eighteenth year since his arrest in 2003. How many years did Sun Dawu get on the various charges? The length of the sentence appears to have been politically predetermined in advance. He received 18 years or, unofficially, one year for every year since his probation began after the trial in 2003. Sun Fushuo (孙福硕), Sun Dawu's younger son, said it plainly during the trial:  “We all know that, no matter how outstanding the lawyers who defended us are, it will not change the rulings against us.” 2. which suggested a kind of pre-determination with regard to both verdicts and sentences.

If prosecutors unofficially lumped together sentences on eight charges to meet a predetermined length in Sun Dawu's case then it potentially jeopardizes the rights of appeal for Sun Dawu. The eighteen year periods from 1985 to 2003, 2003 to 2021 and 2021 to 2039 may be called Triple Unhappiness It is shared by farmers, peasants and migrants.

Sun Dawu’s Closing Court Statement

Sun Dawu, July 28, 2021, in Gaobeidian Court, Baoding City, Hebei Province

Is it dangerous for private enterprises to grow large? Are state-owned enterprises not dangerous if they become bigger? How can such theories stand? State-owned enterprises are the foundation of communism, and the management system of state-owned enterprises is not as efficient as that of private enterprises. Chairman Xi’s speech was in affirmation of private enterprises, he was affirming Deng Xiaoping’s Southern Tour. I truly hope that the Dawu Group system will show Chairman Xi that socialism can work in practice, and it’s something that can be tested by everyone. Not the testing of the Public Security Bureau, but rather, something that can be tested by every consumer. We can withstand the test of time. By blurring ownership while validating the right of use, we turned a family business into an enterprise, and made that enterprise a cause. We have turned an enterprise into a breathing living society. I believe that to us, this ordeal too is part of the process towards betterment. We will not harbor grievances.

The question is, what will happen from now on? I can take on all the guilt, but I ask you to let my senior management go. Acquit them. I will bear the fault in exchange for their release without prosecution, and do so without making it public. Do you think I am unaware of what you are slapping me with? You want to make a case against me for being a mafia leader, for collusion with foreign forces. But do you really understand what my thoughts are? Do you even know what I am doing?

Response to a Journalist’s Query Regarding the Sun Dawu Verdict

Yaxue Cao, July 28, 2021

On a fundamental level, China has no private enterprises because there is no rule of law to protect private property, and there are always some parts of the private enterprises that are not private — by design, like the land Dawu uses and the hot spring resort it developed with the blessing of the local government. The CCP has never seen private enterprises as sovereign entities and it can take them over anytime under the guise of implementing the law. That’s precisely what we have seen in the Dawu case.

The author has often said that the word "private" has no meaning in China under the present system. The government wants to know everything in order to exercise control. The term Private Entrepreneurial Constitutional System (PECS) of Dawu Group has become a misnomer as of November 11, 2020. That was the date of the detainment of 30 employeees of Dawu Group on multiple charges. November 11th was the date that the government effectively seized control of Dawu Group pretending to protect it.

It is easy though to be a critic and more difficult to offer constructive criticism. With this in mind the author recalls asking Sun Dawu a question. To put a date on it is difficult, but it can roughly be dated based on the period when Dawu Group had 24 subsidiaries--it has around 30 now. The question was something like "Why doesn't Dawu Group establish a joint venture on a 50-50 basis with a State Owned Enterprise (SOE)?" The intent of the question was to explore a way the Dawu Group could co-operate rather than potentially compete with the SOE's as well as smooth relations with governments in China.

One might consider a new 50-50 joint venture outside China in the field of agriculture. Both companies would invest equally in a facility or endeavour in a foreign country. One impediment to "private" companies in China such as Dawu Group is that state-owned organs" at the commune level (as opposed to SOE's) do not make such an investment for either profit or principles. The SOE could potentially earn much more than just match the rate of inflation in co-operation with a well-run "private" enterprise. Of course, the joint-venture would be subject to the laws of the foreign country. The author is familiar with one SOE which may have an interest.

                                    The Trial of the Century

Sun Dawu was released from RSDL after 9 months along with six other co-accused. Two defendants under RSDL had irregularly been refused bail which contributed to their suffering even though the law allowed release. Furthermore, it is believed by the author that 3 months is the maximum time an accused can legally be  held in RSDL. It seems this law is circumvented by detaining suspects for an extended period of time before an arrest is made. This circumstance may further erode protective rights of citizens during detainment.

Immediately, upon release, Sun Dawu was taken to the hospital of Dawu Group for observation and treatment for a brief stay of undetermined length; altlhough, it could probably be measured in hours. It is perhaps the best regional hospital and he was examined on the 15th floor. The status of his mental and physical health was unknown publically, but Sun Dawu has said at trial that the circustances of RSDL were tortuous. One could speculate that he was at least debilitated and disoriented.

It is therefore uncertain but probable that he was not totally competent to defend himself at trial. The trial itself was legally public, but de facto secret. One might liken it to a three ring circus ie. all blow and show. Whether or not the trial was intentionally designed to weaken and disorient the defense lawyers and defendants is not known, but that was its effect. Remember that there were 20 defendants who were tried and sentenced in a matter of just fourteen days with hundreds of thousands of pages of evidence submitted. Yet, disclosure of recorded sessions which the defendants demanded to be presented were disallowed by the judge.

One of the few pictures of the trial that escaped the censors was that of an ambulance at the court exit on the final day. It may have been for Sun Dawu, another defendant or defense lawyer. A defense lawyer had complained about the court hours which sometime exceeded fourteen hours and broke labour laws. One might even construe the length of hours and format of proceeding to be tortuous in themselves. Whomever the ambulance was for it is certain that an ambulance ushered in the trial and an ambulance was present at the conclusion of the trial which is rather an infamous and dubious legacy.

Supervisor Sun Dawu was charged with illegal absorption of public deposits, provocation and nuisance, illegal mining, gathering a crowd to storm state organs, illegal occupation of agricultural land, forced trading, disrupting production and operation, and obstructing public service.

With regard to all the evidence in this charge, including audio and video evidence, Sun Dawu provided the following cross-examination opinion: “The Public Security Bureau has used many despicable means to willfully create a wrongful case. The video recording of the scene is the only meaningful evidence, and the rest is not worth refuting. But if they again place me under Residential Surveillance at a Designated Location (RSDL), they will get the same confessions from me, or even worse — they will get whatever they want to get.

During the trial, several defendants questioned the failure of the judicial authorities to uphold their promises, at the same time filing another application for bail pending trial.

Ji Weilian pointed out: “I don’t understand it: the RSDL room as well as the detention center all have 360-degree rotating cameras. They can clearly observe my physical and mental condition. Why can’t I be granted bail?”

Another defendant in the Dawu case is Ji Weilian (纪玮莲).  A former assistant to Sun Dawu (孙大午), she was also placed under RSDL.  Ji suffers from severe depression.  After being taken into custody, she has been vomiting dozens of times a day.  She is extremely weak and on the verge of mental breakdown.

The defendant Ji Weilian (纪玮莲), who previously was also placed under RSDL and suffers from severe depression, said that she could understand how false interrogation transcripts could be created during residential surveillance. This is because — “Mr. Dawu said that during the RSDL period, life was worse than death. But if you ask me, I say words pale in comparison to reality. During the pre-trial meetings, the lawyers proposed to go back to the RSDL site for on-site inspection. I really didn’t want to go, because I trembled even when I thought about that environment.”

The defendant Ji Weilian (纪玮莲, female) said: I could see that there were once windows in the RSDL room. I applied to change rooms, I was extremely agitated, and wanted to dig out the window. I wanted to open the door. I wanted air. I was interrogated too many times. My memory was declining. The case handlers tried to help me recall the details, but I couldn’t recall them. Everything written in the transcripts was prompted by the case handlers, as evidenced by the interrogation video recording. I had hoped to be taken out of the room to be interrogated, because then I could have a breath of fresh air. When a female member of the custodial caretaking staff came into my residential surveillance room she fainted within 5 minutes. During my final two days of detention, the doctor gave me an oxygen bag, which I had kept on requesting but they they had not given it to me. (Crying.) Why did they seal off the windows that had been there, why? I will keep asking, and waiting, for an answer.

The author has always found poetry as one way to combat the blues.  If that fails then he supports a lawsuit for infringement of civil rights.

Sun Meng (孙萌): “They recommended other companies to me to take over Dawu Group!” Sun Dawu’s eldest son and chairman of Dawu Group, Sun Meng, said: “After I was placed under RSDL, an official came and said that Dawu Group needed someone to operate it and recommended several companies to me to take over the group. I said that those companies were not even in the same industry, how could they take over Dawu? From the perspective of the long-term development of the company, my father should be granted bail. Sun Meng’s defense lawyer [Tong Zongjin, 仝宗锦] pointed out that, with the aforementioned opinion, the defense lawyer was not trying to act like the second prosecutor, nor did he wish an innocent man to be charged with a crime; the defense lawyer was simply stating that “the case-handling agencies have not applied the law equally, fairly and justly.” As such, it is entirely possible that this important witness was given certain promises or instructions to make inconsistent statements in order to turn himself [or herself] from a suspect to the prosecutors’ witness. The prosecutors’ evidence presentation did not exclude such reasonable doubt of the defense lawyer.

Sun Dawu's second son, Sun Fushuo 孙福硕 , said: “I don’t know what forced confession made under duress means, but after I was arrested, they handcuffed me to the interrogation chair for more than 30 hours, until my legs were swollen. They all knew what they were doing. The police interrogators made it clear: Don’t think we can’t make you submit; we can place you under RSDL. I knew that RSDL was terrible, and I was scared. The subsequent interrogation transcripts were made under such duress.”

By book, Residential Surveillance in Designated Locations is a relatively minor form of criminal detention measure, but the experience of the defendants in the Dawu case made clear that under RSDL “death is better than life”. Given that these places are without humane living conditions, that female relatives are held as de facto “hostages”, and that investigators used threats and deception for their aims, RSDL has in fact become “illegal detention”. The defendants’ confessions obtained under such circumstances is of course illegal evidence and should be excluded in accordance with the law.

Sun Erwu (孙二午, or 孙德华  Sun Dehua) also expressed disbelief at the charge: “So we were spending money to buy a crime! We bought a crime with 400,000 yuan! I just want to ask: isn’t it true that we gave the restaurant owner a street-front location? If Dawu were to eliminate competition, why would we help relocate the restaurant to a street-front location?”

Sun Erwu believed that all the witness testimonies of the incident were false. The village Party Secretary Yang Xueming was in charge of this matter. Only after he viewed the live video of the scene, said Sun Erwu, did he realize the seriousness of the incident. He did not arrange for anyone to block the warehouse, and no one had informed him about it afterwards. He should not be held responsible.

There is no sun, moon and stars but dazzling lights that blind me day and night,

With two armored soldiers guarding me, six shifts a day, through long and tormentous hours.

Fate is fickle, I am but a living corpse forbidden to speak with eyes wide open.

In unbearable suffering I hold on to faith, as I silently miss Dawu City.”

Tan Ru's Mission is to Sterilize Life

It is difficult to say anything new about the old, original Star Trek (星际迷航) series because the viewpoints of Trekkies have become canonical. Yet, it may be worthwhile to re-examine an episode of the series called The Changeling (变形金刚) which aired on September 29, 1967. That date happens to be close to the 2518th Anniversary of the Birth of Confucius (孔子) on September 28th. While the series purports to be science fiction; nevertheless, it may reflect more of what was going on in the present at that time.

On the macro scale, the United States was involved in a proxy war with China and Russia in Vietnam; so, it might be regarded as a conflict between democratic and communistic systems or more simply as powers wishing to extend their influence through imperialism. In China, the Cultural Revolution
)  had begun which was designed by Mao to replace the four olds (which didn't include Mao himself) with a new order of Communism. It was based on Mao Thought (毛泽东思想) of which Xi Thought (习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想), today, bears an uncanny resemblance which is not coincidental. Thought is not theory which can be proven scientifically as correct or incorrect as in Deng Theory (邓小平理论), but has more nebulous characteristics (模糊特征) with various interpretations and is of a purported higher order.

An event was presaged by the People's Daily editorial on June 1, 1966 about the Four Olds (四旧). It was fulfilled through one of the notable occurences in 1966 during the Cultural Revolution beginning on November 07th which  involved the activities of the young Red Guards (红卫兵) led by Tan Houlan (谭厚兰).
The campaign was called "Annihilate the Kong Family Business" (消灭孔氏家族企业).  In the offensive the Guards dug up and dynamited corpses of the family of Confucius and set them on fire. They also unburied and burned 100,000 Confucian texts.

It was part of  an offensive against the so-called capitalist-roaders (走资派). Deng Xiaoping (
邓小平) was regarded as one of the capitalist-roaders.  He was attacked verbally and physically by the Red Guards. 15  Of course, after the Gang of Four (四人帮) who were charged with treason, Deng Xiaoping led China through a series of far-reaching economic, market reforms. Today, the pendulum has swung away  from reform or should one stress that the pendulum has been sharpened?

Red Guard Rampage at Kong Family Cemetary led by Tan Houlan

It was basically an assault on "rule of law" (法律规定), the family, Ruism (儒) or Confucianism itself . However, one can't  easily destroy traditions going back thousands of years which are the essence of what it means to be Chinese by a single act of madness or  through symbolic gestures. Communism has little to do with tradition or what it means to be Chinese, but more to do with "The business of revolution" (革命事业) to quote Sang Ye and Geremie R. Barmé  6.

The campaign to dig up Confucian texts and  the bones of the first three generations and the last three generations of Confucius' family and set them on fire reminds the author in an inverse way of instructions given by Emperor Qin Shi Huang (秦始皇) or first emperor of the Qin Dynasty which was one of the most short-lived and brutal dynasties. He ordered Confucian scholars to be buried and their books burned. One might say that Qin represented "rule by law" (依法治国). He may have been the first practitioner of "Tough Thought" (强硬想法) 16  on a grand scale or at least has historically inspired it even if there is a pretense by modern acolytes to ignore, cherry pick or reinterpret history.

The basic plot of The Changeling  is improbable bordering on impossible, but remember it is set in the future (star date 3541.9 to be exact). An interstellar probe is launched from Earth in 2002. It is called Nomad Its mission is to explore for life forms. It collides with a meteor and is damaged. Eventually, it meets an alien probe which is designed to sterilize soil as a prelude to colonization. Nomad repairs itself with help from the other probe, but its mission is skewed.

As Tan Ru (
9 its goal is now to sterilize life. It begins by sterilizing 4 billion inhabitants of the Malurian system. This number roughly corresponds to the whole population of Earth which in 1967 numbered 3,478,770,104. It then proceeds to the planet of its creator or Earth where it intends to sterilize the population. In this sense, the episode is apocalyptic.

If one wishes to interpret the clash of systems representing both life and sterilization as it pertains only to China then one may begin one's examination with The Great Leap Forward 大跃进 (1958-1962). It was the clash between the old feudal system and the establishment of a new, Communist industrial system through people's communes. However, the unexpected consequence of a new wind of communism with the meteoric rise of Mao was the death of over 40 million Chinese in a man-made famine. It is comparable to a freak accident of a probe hit by a meteor. The probe repairs itself with the help of an alien probe, but its mission changes to sterilization of life.

Sun Dawu (孙大午) was born in 1954 in the village of Langwuzhuang. It was just before The Great Leap Forward. As a youngster he had no food to eat. He was forced to eat grass to survive. He estimates that millions more were killed in The Great Famine
(1958-1962) than have been officially reported.

To enforce the unrealistic quotas which were never met, First Party Secretary Zhang Guozhong ran a labour camp. It held 1.5% of the population from farmers to Party officials who offered resistance. Punishment included flogging and naked exposure to the winter elements. As a result, 124 people did die. "Outside the camp some 7,000 people were tied up, beaten, spat upon, paraded, forced to kneel or deprived of food, resulting in another 212 deaths." 18

"A little over an hour's drive from Beijing via the new highway, Xushui (徐水) was a star county of the Great Leap Forward at the end of the 1950's. Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi both toured Xushui and promoted the community nationwide. It is where the fantasy started that a single mu of land could produce 10,000 catties of wheat (亩产万斤).  Upon learning that there was so much food it couldn't be eaten Mao told the members of the people's communes to eat five meals a day.  The tragedy that transpired following The Great Leap Forward is well known
to history." 2

Picture
Chairman Mao visits Xushui in 1958
The people's commune of Xushui (徐水) in 1958 set the national standard with Mao's visit for two reasons. On hearing of the projected, unrealistic harvests that were expected in the autumn, Mao recommended the following. 'Plant a little less and do half a day's work. Use the other half for culture: study science, promote culture and recreation, run a college and middle school.' 4   It meant nothing to starving people. Do you know that no one officially starved in China as they were listed as dying of other causes and imaginary diseases?

Furthermore, the institution of the family was destroyed in the People's Commune of Xushui. The first separation of men and women into different living quarters took place in Xushui in 1958. The practice of separation spread to Henan, Hunan and Anhui. It was said through propaganda that the dearest persons in the world are our parents, but they cannot compare to Chairman Mao and the Communist Party. 1

"During the Great Leap Forward in 1958, Xushui became a model county for state collectivizing measures. The Xushui experiment in Communism was one of the most revolutionary, ludicrous, and tragic experiments in the history of China, as Chinese scholars now recognize.  Mao visited communes in Dingxian and Xushui. Just southeast of Xushui county-town, Dasigezhuang village was renamed the 4th August brigade. But when Zhou Enlai (周恩来) visited he was shocked to see the destitution that communization was bringing, and Xushui's favoured status did nothing to prevent many starving to death there around 1960." 4

Picture
The Great Famine threatened to undermine Mao's power so the Cultural Revolution ensued from 1966 to 1976. It represented the collapse of Chinese civilization. New targets of resistance classified as enemies were found. One of these targets of a new apocalypse was the family. For example, young Red Guards were encouraged to "turn in" members of their family who deviated from Mao Thought.

On November 07, 1966. Red Guards under the leadership of Tan Houlan (谭厚兰) dug up and dynamited the graves of the first three and last three generations of the Kong family (Confucius).  On November 29, 1966, a telegram was sent to Chairman Mao.  It read as follows:

“Dearest Chairman Mao,

One hundred thousand members of the revolutionary masses would like to report a thrilling development to you: we have rebelled! We have rebelled! We have dragged out the clay statue of Kong the Second Son (Kong lao’er 孔老二);  we have torn down the plaque extolling the ‘teacher of ten-thousand generations’;  we have leveled Confucius’ grave; we have smashed the stelae extolling the virtues of the feudal emperors and kings, and we have obliterated the statues in the Confucius Temple! 6

With reference to The Changling one may also refer to geometry.  Imagine two equilateral triangles  in the sci-fi episode which are fairly balanced. They correspond to the two probes representing life and sterilization. Then, an unexpected happening transpires which distorts the balance and harmony of sine, co-sine and tangent. It is tangent then that rules or what is called Tan Ru in The Changeling episode. The new triangle is no longer equilateral. It corresponds to illogic or Mao Thought gone askew without checks and balances during The Great Leap Forward and The Cultural Revolution. It is personified by the zealot Tan Houlan during the latter revolution.
Picture
Dawu City is NNW of Xushui
A "farm" whose generic name is used herein was created as an organ of the state in 1958 at the beginning of The Great Leap Forward. In theory, it was created in order to use unplanted land and wasteland in the surrounding villages. However, [in 1963] the "farm" also requisitioned large amounts of land from surrounding villages such as Dingzhuang Village, Langwuzhuang Village, Mazhuang Village, and Zhaizhuang Village." 3  The implication was that if it wasn't accepted then one didn't eat.

The farm's new mission wasn't to sterilize wasteland for productive usage, but rather it adopted a mission which is metaphorically similar to The Changeling. The farm sterilized life in the villages.  Life left. The "farm" is the metaphorical equivalent of Tan Ru (
谭儒) or Tangent Rules which sterilizes life. Tan Ru (谭儒) is shaped like a drill and it drills out life with a laser or photon torpedo. It wishes to sterilize the King Fisher (翠鸟) who as head of Dawu Group brings fertility to the Waste Land (荒地). 19, 20
Picture
In 1985--not 1958, it was the Dawu Group which formed an agricultural enterprise on wasteland by leasing it. The more successful it became the more irritating it was to the "farm". Sun Dawu states the problem succinctly. "The farm does not have a dominant position in the market economy, it does not have the qualifications to cooperate with me, and the two sides have no basis for equal cooperation, because the farm itself has no ownership, and it manages the land for the country, but the background is different. It is vacant, and there is no real unit that bears economic responsibilities, and no investors. The Bureau of Agriculture is only responsible for policy guidance, regardless of the farm’s business activities." 3

In 2010, the newly built Rongwu Expressway reignited the dispute between the "farm" and Dawu Group. Even though Dawu Group leased the land, it could only be compensated for ground attachments. This meant major compensation went to the "farm". 12

Dawu Group

More recently, the Dawu Group encountered major problems with its Dawu Kangyang Nursing Home Project (8 apartment buildings).  It was approved by the district chiefs and had support from the Xushui District Land Bureau. However,on July 25, 2018 the decision was reversed. It was declared the buildings were built without approval and the land was illegally occupied. At the request of The Xushui District Government and Land Bureau, the Group paid a fine of 4,151,250 yuan. In addition, the 77,000 square meter project was confiscated and Sun Dawu threatened with arrest. 21  If the project received approval from the local government then how did it all of a sudden become illegal according to Sun Dawu?

Picture
The Great Noon Triangle comprised of Xushui City, Dawu City, Fushan and Baoding City Satellite
Dawu City is seven kilometers northwest of Xushui City. One might imagine it forming a small, equilateral triangle (等边三角形) of Xushui City, Dawu City, Fushan and Baoding City. Fushan is included because Sun Dawu is guardian of the mountain where Huangdi united the tribes over five thousand years ago. In addition, remnants of religious enclosures can be found at Fushan. The Sun Temple Park at Dawu City with its Confucian and Buddhist temples is the spiritual center of the region.
Picture
Sharing one side of the equilateral triangle which might be referred to as The Great Noon Triangle (大正午三角) is one side of what might be referred to as a non-equilateral Great Xiong'an Triangle (雄安新三角) whose center is Xiong'an New Area (雄安新区). Xiong'an New Area is expected to grow exponentially. It is the artificial intelligence, 5G, I of T center of The Great Xiong'an Triangle. The programs and programmers of the area reflect Xi Thought; whereas, Dawu City serves people personifying Sun's  heart.
Picture
Both triangles are within the bigger area called Jing-Jin-Ji (雄安新三角) or Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei (known as Ji). It can also be said that a large piece of Jing-Jin-Ji (JJJ) may be found within an imagined non-equilateral triangle of Beijing, Tianjin and Baoding.

The centerpiece or hub of the JJJ megalopolis is Xiong'an New Area.  It was founded on April 1, 2017.  It's about 40 kilometres east of Xushui City. It seems that Jing-Jin-Ji rings in a poetic way with President Xi Jinping's name and furthermore that the Xiong'an hub of Jing-Jin-Ji represents his legacy.

During the Northern Song Dynasty 北宋 (960-1127), the area was a Watery Great Wall. In the Sixth Lunar Month of 1048, the Yellow River flooded 13 and more floods followed. However, in 1128, General Du Chong intentionally broke the bank of the river thereby provoking a flood in order to halt the Jurchen invasion. The waterlogged swamps were not deep enough for boats, but not shallow enough for soldiers to walk through. The swamp stretched nearly 500 kilometers. As a result, fertile farmland was lost and replaced by salinized, sand- covered land. The peasant-farmers left.

A thousand years later the state is draining the swamps in order to build a modern hub of the future. While peasants have returned to make claim on their property the legacy is "soil salinization, water toxicity and poverty". Why are farmers poor and why do they have little to eat? The answer is that the state plans for them and plans for them badly.

The "farm" and land bureau have disturbed the harmony between The Great Noon Triangle and  Great Xiong'an Triangle. It has disrupted the balance between Dawu Village founded in 1985 to become a city and Xiong'an New Area  founded in 2017 to become a hub. If Dawu Group (大午集团) as a large, self-sufficient agricultural enterprise is metaphorically sterilized then who will provide food for programmers in the self-sufficient, Xiong'an New Area with its sandy, salinized soil?  There is friction brought about, too, along the Xushui-Baoding common line of the triangles or between heart and thought.

In Dawu's view, the "farm" is like a "freak" (怪物) 3. Its business activities have nothing to do with its superiors, its profits and losses have nothing to do with its superiors, and the amount of money it makes is not handed over to the state or the government. However, the superiors will still provide various compensations to the "farm" according to the agricultural land. In other words, as a result of a freak accident in The Great Leap Forward, the "farm" has itself become like a "freak" where Tangent and illogical arbitrariness rule.

Picture
Dawu Group has made it explicitly clear in writing that it does not give bribes nor accept bribes or red packets. It has been trusted by the local peasant population since its inception in 1985. The Group established a co-operative-grain bank which has had the confidence of farmers since at least 2003 if not earlier. Its medical system is free and is not plagued with bribery as it is throughout China. The Group puts people ahead of profits. Anyone who claims the Dawu Group is corrupt has corrupted the definition of corruption. Therefore, it is abundantly evident that charges  brought against executives of Dawu Group for corruption have no basis in truth. They are infamous  confabulations.

Dawu Group represents life and growth in the Xushui area. It reclaims the waste land. Sun Dawu represents  the Kingfisher (翠鸟) 19,20  bringing fertility (生育能力). On the other hand, the "farm" is sterile (无菌的) and metaphorically sterilizes its people as a Changeling. As a result, the peasant-farmers live in poverty or have moved away to poverty. Life is sterilized.

The clashes of “6.21事件”和“8.4事件 were not provoked ( 没有被激怒)) by Dawu Group, but by the "farm". It is the metaphorical equivalent of Tan Ru (谭儒) firing 90 photon torpedoes (光子鱼雷) at the starship Enterprise (星舰企业). The campaign to annihilate the private enterprise of Dawu Group in 2020-21 (which is run on Confucian principles stressing the importance of the family along with its ancestors) is equivalent to the campaign to "Annihilate the Kong Family Business" (消灭孔氏家族企业) in 1966. The new campaign might be called an attempt to  "Annihilate the Sun Family Business" (歼灭太阳家族企业) as part of Cultural Revolution 2.0.  It can be expressed by lyrics from the 1965 single called "Paint It Black" (把它涂黑) by the Rolling Stones (滚石).

"I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black.

Sun Dawu once sighed that at the recent mention of Chongqing’s affairs, everyone still has lingering fears, saying that they are afraid of the "Cultural Revolution" to turn around. It is true. I am 59 years old this year. Since then, when has our society escaped the shadow of the "Cultural Revolution"?

L'image poem of D. Carlton Rossi based on Draconis 11 and 10 and the Big and Little Dippers

Of the evidence presented by the public prosecutors, there was one piece of written evidence of special importance. Lawyer Wang Shihua regarded it as “the eye of the case” (“案眼"), evidence of a “case-critical” nature, and believed that this evidence alone could explain why the well-known entrepreneur Sun Dawu is standing trial today. This evidence is the “Minutes of the Public Security Bureau [2020] No. 1 Meeting of Xushui District Public Security Bureau of Baoding Municipality.” The minutes of the meeting show: On August 3, 2020, the state-owned farm, planning to clear the Dawu Farm’s structures on its own initiative, requested Xushui District PSB to provide police presence to maintain order at the scene. Xushui District PSB decided that the police force would arrive at the demolition site before 5 a.m. on August 4. Yet the manner in which the Baoding Farm requested police protection was no more than a written document submitted to the PSB on August 2, and its main content simply stated that the farm planned to demolish the fencing and mobile houses erected by the Dawu Group on August 4.

Several defense lawyers focused their cross-examination on this piece of evidence. Lawyer Wang Shihua pointed out that the written request of the state-owned farm was not a report of criminal conduct. The illegality of requesting police protection in such a manner, as well as the police force’s intervention in a civil dispute, is obvious. “If I believe I face physical danger while defending a client in court in Gaobeidian today, and I ask the PSB to send policemen to protect me, is that acceptable? Of course not. Because I represent private interests, and the police can only be used to protect public affairs and public power.” In addition, given that the minutes of the PSB meeting and the state farm’s written request were both created before the August 4 incident, “it is a trap set up for Dawu. The case we are going through such lengths trying today is no more than a case involving a civil dispute.”

The Chinese businessman who defied the state and got locked up

A person with knowledge of the case said prosecutors were urging the defendants and their families to fire their lawyers and hire legal representatives from Gaobeidian or allow the government to appoint them.

Legal team members: Shihua, Yang Xuelin, Tong Zongjin, Zhang Lei, Liu Jinbin, Zhu Xiaoding, Wang Wanqiong, Zhou Lei, Zhou Haiyang, Hao Yachao, Shen Yachuan and other well-known lawyers.

If it is true that prosecutors urged defendants and their families to fire their lawyers and hire legal representatives from Gaobeidian or allow the government to appoint them then a mistrial must be declared; otherwise, there is not even the appearance of justice.

Sun Dawu's Minor Grandchildren become "Legal Orphans"

China Business News: Sun Dawu's new puzzle: What is a state-owned farm?

Sun Dawu was considering whether he should cooperate with the construction of the expressway passing by the Dawu Group.

"Freak" State Farm

In Sun Dawu's view, the state-owned farm is like a "freak": its business activities have nothing to do with its superiors, its profits and losses have nothing to do with its superiors, and the amount of money it makes is not handed over to the state or the government. However, the superiors will still provide various compensations to the farm according to the agricultural land (the original situation was that farmers pay agricultural tax, and the farm also pays agricultural tax; now farmers enjoy a subsidy of more than 80 yuan per mu, and the farm also enjoys it), and the farm operates in a market economy. Being conceited, I can't see what it has to do with the "country".

"The leader of the farm is the one with the most power. Now the farm has 7,000 mu of land, and the farm manager can issue a contract to anyone. All the profits are determined by the farm leader. As long as the farm employees don’t make trouble, everything will be fine. Regarding the management of the farm. There is no need to ask for instructions and no discussion. There is also a democratically elected village committee in the countryside. When something happens, the village committee will discuss it. It is hard to understand who the "owner" of the local state-owned farm is. Strange phenomenon." Sun Dawu said.

In fact, in my country, in addition to Xinjiang, Heilongjiang, and Hainan, which have vast farms built by the country after the founding of the country, state farms such as the local state farm in Baoding are very scattered in traditional agricultural areas.

The formation of Baoding local state farm also has a very complicated historical background. The reporter learned that Baoding Xushui County was the birthplace of the People’s Commune, and the local state-owned farm in Baoding was also established in the tide of the “communist wind” that year. According to Zhang Hongsheng, head of the farm, the farm was established in 1958 during the Great Leap Forward. "It was mainly formed by using unplanted land and wasteland in the surrounding villages."

However, the farm also requisitioned large amounts of land from surrounding villages such as Dingzhuang Village, Langwuzhuang Village, Mazhuang Village, and Zhaizhuang Village. It is understood that the state-owned farm has more than 5,600 mu of arable land, of which more than 2,400 mu is rented out. A complaint from the surrounding village committees obtained by the reporter shows that the farm occupies a total of 5085 mu of collective land in the four villages of Langwuzhuang, Mazhuang, Zhaizhuang, and Dingzhuang, which shows that it occupies most of the existing land area of the farm. . However, Zhang Hongsheng's statement is "not so much."

Now the country’s subsidy policy for agriculture is becoming more and more generous, making the difference between farm workers and surrounding villagers more prominent. Locals told reporters that the per capita arable land of surrounding villagers is less than 2 mu, while farm workers only have more than 100 people. The per capita arable land has reached fifty or sixty acres, which is very rich. This naturally makes the villagers psychologically imbalanced, so they hope to get back the land that has been freely occupied by the farm for decades. After all, they did not respond to their petitions over the years.

"Where is the root of this problem? The "Property Law" has left blanks," said Bao Yujun. "The Property Law has left a lot of blanks when it comes to the rights of the state, collectives, and individuals. Among them are the contractors of state-owned farms. If there is no usufructuary right, it is a question of whether it is the owner of the right of use. When explaining, use the collective explanation to deal with you. In fact, it is whether the private enterprise’s contracted lease use right has been denied, so you are in a very dangerous situation, when? If you have to accept it, you can accept it. Contracting and leasing cannot be protected by law. This is a critical issue."

Therefore, Bao Yujun suggested that the owner of the state-owned farm must be found. This is the root cause. “In fact, not only state-owned farms, but state-owned forest farms, fisheries, and salt farms all have similar owner problems to be solved.” Sun Dawu’s plan is to restructure Baoding local state-owned farms, “it is possible to reserve a considerable amount of land to the original workers of the farm. As a resettlement for them, to ensure their livelihood, other land should be returned to the surrounding villagers. Otherwise, these problems will erupt sooner or later.

A basic tenet of law is that a defendant has the right to meet his accuser. At trial, Sun Dawu has the right to meet the owner of the state-owned farm. If the owner cannot be identified then charges should be dismissed.

Sun Dawu: Talk about the protection of legal persons’ property rights

2016-11-17 18:19 Reading (633)

I believe that the property rights of legal persons are a kind of public power, while the general meeting of shareholders is a kind of private power. Property cannot be named public, and public power cannot be named private. Property can be inherited, but the position of the manager cannot be inherited. The position of the chairman is a public power, because the chairman is not the power of the general meeting of shareholders, but the power of the legal person's property rights.

I have tried to communicate with Dawu Group without success.  Letters to Langwuzhuang and even Baoding are being returned.  Therefore, I will write openly.  Miss Ji Weilian (纪玮莲) is pictured on the left. She is Sun Dawu's personal secretary. Both she and Sun Dawu among others have been arrested. With respect to Sun Dawu it should be noted that his entire family has been arrested. Both Ji and Sun are my personal friends.

I was rather shocked to read comments made by both at the pre-trial hearing as well as other family members. There is a horror and terror experienced by them.  Sun is being fed pickled vegetables even though he is the Chairman of one of the largest agricultural enterprises in Hebei Province. Miss Ji cannot keep food down.  Sun's grandchildren are left at home without proper supervision. To understand this matter you have to know that Sun, his wife (Liu), his two sons, his brothers and sister-in-laws have also been arrested. I have known them all since 2002. They are decent people.

I therefore extend a formal invitation to the parents of Miss Ji to visit me in Port Colborne,  Canada.  At least they and Miss Ji will have some relief for the short duration of their visit.  I also extend a formal invitation to the five grandchildren of Sun Dawu and his wife; so that the children can relax and be carefree here for a short while.  Do not forget that Sun asked me to China in December 2019 to teach teachers at Dawu School as well as his grandchildren.

Miss Ji's parents or subsitutes can act as chaperones as well as any and all members of the Sun family who have not yet been arrested to supervise the children and to secure their welfare. You may all visit me immediately.

"影响农村金融稳定的不是孙大午,而是垄断的、僵化的金融体制。”

"It is not Sun Dawu that affects rural financial stability,  but the monopolistic and rigid financial system."

SUN Dawu's Eulogy to Bao Yujun

Mr. Bao Yujun played an important role in Deng Xiaoping's comeback, the restoration of the college entrance examination, and the rectification of intellectuals. After he was transferred from the propaganda department to the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, two proposals led to the entry of private property into the constitution, and he repeatedly spoke for private enterprises. He is straightforward and dare to tell the truth. To be honest, it takes courage and is respectable. People call him "protecting a cannon", but I think he is more like a torch that warms private enterprises. He has made a great contribution to China's private economy. Private enterprises should not forget him, and Dawu Group will never forget him. In the celebration of the 30th anniversary of our establishment in 2014, Chairman Bao said: "Dawu Group is self-reliant and gradual! It is not honourable for nothing." We are very touched by this! "Self-reliance" is the portrayal of the 30 years of our Dawu Group. Our future development still depends on "self-reliance".
