Shanghai’s highest temperature exceeds 50℃? Officials are busy ‘refuting rumors’
Katherine Miller

August 08, 2022

The high temperatures that have scorched China for the last two months continue. The weather app on iPhone shows that the maximum temperature in Shanghai is above 50°C, but the local Bureau of Meteorology claims it is “not real.” Many netizens do not believe the authorities’ explanation.

On Aug. 5, the Iphone’s weather software showed that the highest temperature in Shanghai that day reached 122 F (50 C). For example, Putuo district reached 123 F (51 C) and Jing’an District also reached 116 F (47 C). However, the local Meteorological Bureau announced that the temperature in Shanghai was only about 104 F (40°C).

Some netizens also said that the temperature data released by the government is “political,”, and it can also meet the “economic needs” of Chinese authorities. Many people said that the temperature in the country never exceeds 104 F, and if the temperature goes above that, work will be suspended and workers will be subsidized.

D. Carlton Rossi regularly exercised outdoors in Saudi Arabia at high noon when the temperature reached 48°C  and -4°C in China at 5:00 am without shirt.  In Saudi Arabia, he wore a T-shirt because otherwise he would have been arrested for immodesty. He prepared for a short or extended fight against anyone, anytime under any cirucumstances.

His ability to undertake strenuous exercise in extreme tempertures may have had something to do with his normal body temperture which is 36°C.  That temperature is below average. There are some who might say he is somewhat cold-blooded while others say he is a warm-blooded romantic.

China's first heatwave in 149 years... a street tree caught on fire

Teller Report,

July 14, 2022

In China, the heatwave has been going on for a month, with the temperature in various places exceeding 40 degrees. Glue melted on the roof of the building, the tops spilled, and street trees caught fire on their own.

The rails are cooled with ice to prevent them from being deformed by high temperatures, and the use of cooling products is rapidly increasing, resulting in overloads and explosions of transformers.

Heatwaves to menace China as almanac's 'big heat' day looms

Ryan Woo

July 22, 2022

A sharp temperature spike is expected on Saturday, before building up into heatwaves, defined as periods of atypically hot weather of three days or more. This Saturday is the day of the "big heat" in the Chinese Almanac based on the lunar calendar.

A sharp temperature spike is expected on Saturday, before building up into heatwaves, defined as periods of atypically hot weather of three days or more. This Saturday is the day of the "big heat" in the Chinese Almanac based on the lunar calendar.

From June 1 to July 20, the Yellow River and Yangtze River basins - major centres of industry and commerce - were hit by at least 10 high-temperature days more than the norm.

Mortality caused by heatwaves in China has increased since 1979

Li Yuan, Chinese Academy of Sciences

July 21, 2022

In a warming world, the threat of heatwaves to human health is increasing. Researchers led by Dr. Zhao Liang from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Prof. Huang Cunrui from Tsinghua University investigated the spatial and temporal variation of heatwave-related human deaths in China from 1979 to 2020.

The study was published in Science Bulletin.

"We found that the number of deaths caused by heatwaves in China has increased rapidly since 1979, from 3,679 persons per year in the 1980s to 15,500 persons per year in the 2010s," said Dr. Zhao. "We also found strong spatial heterogeneity across the country, with more human deaths in East and Central China."

Based on excess mortality calculations, The Economist estimates that the true number of COVID-19 deaths in China is something like 1.7 million. However, if we take official cases then there have been 5,393,940 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 23,072 deaths from 3 January 2020 to 22 July 2022 as reported to WHO.
If 15,500 persons have died per year in the 2010s of heat related causes and there were only 23,072 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in a two and a half year period then aren't heat related deaths the bigger problem? Why doesn't the Chinese government concentrate on heat related issues rather than Dynamic Zero Covid strategies and programs?  Why are the elderly, infirm and immune compromised who are most susceptible to heat related issues forced to stand in lines for COVID-19 tests in sweltering heat exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit?

Heatwaves in dozens of Chinese cities buckle roads, pop roof tiles

July 12, 2022

BEIJING (Reuters) -China's commercial capital of Shanghai and dozens of other Chinese cities baked in scorching temperatures as unusually hot weather buckled roads, popped roof tiles and drove people to seek the cool in raid shelters underground.

By 3 p.m. (0700 GMT) on Tuesday, 86 cities had issued red alerts, the highest in a three-tier warning system, warning of temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) in the next 24 hours. Construction and other outdoor work are to be halted.

Shanghai, which is still fighting sporadic outbreaks of COVID-19, told its population of 25 million to prepare for hot weather this week after issuing its first red alert in five years on Sunday. Since record-keeping began in 1873, Shanghai has had just 15 days of temperatures exceeding 40 degrees.

Record temperatures in Shanghai as heatwave bakes China

July 13, 2022

At a central Shanghai weather station on Wednesday, the mercury climbed to 40.9 degrees Celsius (105.6 Fahrenheit) by 2:30 pm, the official news site of the national meteorological service reported.

The figure "matched the record highest air temperature in the local area since records began in 1873," the article said.

The temperature is slightly cooler in the countryside.

Weather for Langwuzhuang, Hebei on July 14, 2022

Maximum  93 degrees Fahrenheit and Minimum of 71 degrees Fahrenheit
Winds 4 mph

As the temperature rises and is consistently high without any sign of cooling rain then there is a high probability the corn crop at Langwuzhuang Village, Hebei and the wheat crop in northern China will be adversely affected. SUN Dawu was born at the village of Langwuzhuang.

China is undergoing a rather dire situation with regard to climate which has continued for a couple of months this year. It is rain in the South and heatwave in the North. Excessive rain leads to floods--on average 180 floods per year. The floods destroy the rice crop in the South. On the other hand, excessively high temperatures in the North destroy the wheat crop. The common word is "destroy". Both the rice and wheat crops face destruction. That is not good news for a population of 1.4 billion who depend on food.

This situation is compounded by the "dragonian" policy and strategy called Zero Tolerance Dynamic COVID. They are not derived from tyrannical laws in ancient Athens named after Draco. Rather, they come from ancient laws of the Xia Dynasty which is renowned for its brevity and severity.

Both the Zero policy and strategy compound the food problem by interrupting supply chains. They are not a solution to the food problem but rather exacerbate  it. One is reminded of the killing of sparrows during Mao's mostly "man-made" Great Chinese Famine 三年大饥  (1959-1961). The culling of sparrows brought about a plague of locusts decimating everything.

China Hit by Floods and Heat Waves in Climate Double Whammy

Flooding in the south has forced millions to relocate, while provinces in the north are experiencing record heat.

Bloomberg News

June 20, 2022

Record rains in China’s southern provinces have forced millions of people to relocate even as the country’s north experiences abnormally high temperatures, showing the dual impacts of climate change in the world’s second-biggest economy.

From May 1 to June 15, the average precipitation in Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi reached 621 millimeters, the highest recorded in six decades, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. Floods occurred along 117 rivers in the Pearl River Basin during the same period. The manufacturing hub of Guangzhou saw its highest tide in a century last week, with waters exceeding 2.6 meters (8.5 feet).

Meanwhile heat waves are striking the northern and central provinces with some regions experiencing average temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) for days. Thermometers in almost half of all cities in Henan province, which is home to nearly 100 million people, reached 40°C last Thursday. More than 90 monitoring stations in the province recorded ground temperatures — which can be much higher because of concrete and asphalt pavements — that exceeded 60°C. Eight stations saw 70°C on the same day.
