                                                      Shanghai Quarantine

Breaking news: Shanghai lockdown spills over as police evict residents

The extreme lockdown in Shanghai, deemed unnecessary by many, has resulted in violent clashes with police who evict residents so their homes can be used to house the infected.

Video that has appeared online and broadcast by the BBC shows residents being evicted as the city turns whole residential compounds into quarantine centres.

The centres are needed to house those quarantined, anyone who tests positive is required to enter a quarantine centre, with the government having run out of space in schools, hospitals and exhibition halls.

China And Russia Make Critical Mineral Grabs in Africa While the U.S. Snoozes

Ariel Cohen

January 13, 2022

Amidst the rising social and environmental costs of mining in the West, less scrupulous countries like Russia and China are capitalizing on soaring demand. Despite Russia holding the 4th largest global supply of REEs, with an estimated 12 million tonnes, they – along with China – have decided to use political leverage to secure mining deals throughout Africa, where labor is cheap, and regulations are virtually nonexistent. While China has entered the region through billions of dollars in Belt and Road financing, Russia is making inroads through the strategic deployment of mercenaries.

Hong Kong (CNN) Morgues are nearly at capacity, hospitals overwhelmed and, as fears grow of a citywide lockdown, panicked shoppers have stripped supermarket shelves bare.

Hong Kong -- once lauded as a zero-Covid success story -- is now battling a deadly outbreak reminiscent of the early days of the pandemic, despite having had more than two years to prepare.
With locally transmitted cases surging past 312,000 in the city of 7.4 million in just the last two weeks, hospitals and embattled health workers have been stretched to breaking point. The numbers are likely to be far higher due to suspicions people are not reporting their positive test results for fear of being separated from families and put into government isolation facilities.

D. Carlton Rossi informed Dawu Group of COVID-19 on January 16, 2020 based on reports from the British medical journal called The Lancet.  Later,  the Group decided to send 100 medical personnel to the front lines of Wuhan at the height of the COVID-19  crisis in March 2020. The Party rejected the help.

The author volunteered to handle administrative duties in Hong Kong if Dawu volunteers would join him there. He believed the virus could be contained if proper measures were taken for treatment.  At that time, there were less than 100 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hong Kong.

The author wished to apply his experience during the SARS crisis in Beijing and Langwuzhuang Village in the spring of 2003. In Beijing, he was at Ground Zero of the epidemic.  The restaurant across the road  from the Graduate School's apartments was converted into a SARS hospital. He was one of the few foreigners left in Beijing. For example, most personnel of the embassies had left. He then travelled to Langwuzhuang Village to set up a college on behalf of Dawu Group in May 2003.  SARS did not stop him in 2003. His intention was to stop SARS-CoV-2 in Hong Kong in 2020.

左到右 Left to Right:   孙萌 SUN Meng,   刘平 LIU Ping,   孙大午 SUN Dawu,   孙二午 SUN Erwu,   孙福硕 SUN Fushuo   (2013 年 2 月 24 日  February 24, 2013)

Sun Dawu served the people as Chairman of Dawu Group for 35 years.  In his early career, he served his country in the 82nd Division of the 28th Army Group in Linfen, Shanxi Province.

                                                  Outsiders and Insiders

An article published on Weibo at the time of the sentencing of Sun Dawu is perceptive in that it expresses an unique perspective of the case. It is written by Junwei Changfeng (军威长风).  On the whole, it compares the cases of Sun Dawu (孙大午) and Ren Zhiqiang (孙大午) who were both sentenced to prison terms of eighteen years. What caught the author's attention though was the contrast between "outside and inside"--meaning outside and inside China. The phrase will be expanded upon by the author with respect to the term "disease" in terms of comparison.

With regard to the Sun Dawu case, he basically says that those outside China today (or more specifically the Great Firewall of China) are concerned with issues of free speech. These issues might be tied, by inference in the author's opinion,  to civil rights. For example, Sun Dawu is someone who speaks out and dares to tell the truth.  In 2015, he expressed support for lawyers who were arrested en masse for  defending rule of law and constitutionalism.

On the other hand, those within China place a greater emphasis on the issue of land disputes. This explains why they are most interested in the land disputes between Dawu Group (大午集团) and Xushui State Farm (徐水国营农场) which are typical of other land disputes in many aspects. Issues concerning land have been lingering or should one say festering since the time of the Great Leap Forward. One wonders why the government can't solve these issues or rather why it doesn't want to solve these issues over the span of seventy years? What possible motive may it have to prefer ambiguity over certainty?  The reader will notice that while in China it is safer to request clarification by posing questions than answers through edification.
However, it seems that there is at least one topic concerning Sun Dawu that is important to both outsiders and insiders.

Picture
Picture

The issue is African Swine Flu 非洲猪流感 (ASF). Sun Dawu spoke of a government cover-up and he used scientific evidence to back-up his claims. Both outsiders and insiders were concerned about its spread, the government cover-up and its economic consequences. The blog site of Sun Dawu with over a million hits in China was closed down by authorities. They are authorities only with respect to control rather than reason and justice.

African Swine Flu is a hemorrhagic disease that mainly affects swine; although, a few cases have been known among those who handle swine. On the other hand, SARS-CoV-19 is a pulmonary disease that can affect the human population. Linda Saif, virologist and distinguished professor in the Food Animal Health Research Program at The Ohio State University says that "SARS-CoV-2 is part of a third distinct group of coronaviruses (beta CoV) and is genetically and antigenically distinct from these two swine coronaviruses". This means there is no cross-infection between swine and humans with regard to SARS-CoV-2.  ASF originated outside of China while COVID-19 originated inside China probably at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and appears to have spread through the Baishazhou Market.

The reason this is pertinent to the Sun Dawu case is two-fold. First, Sun Dawu was arrested on May 27, 2003 during the SARS epidemic which was centered in Beijing. Then, seventeen years later, a mutated version of COVID-19 hit Wuhan and then Beijing.   Its epicenter was another wholesale, wet market called Xinfadi in Beijing.

Picture

As a result, the city of Baoding, Hebei was placed under martial law on June 15, 2020 because it had trading ties with the Xinfadi Wet Market. To get one's bearing, Baoding is about 150 km from Beijing West Station, 40 km from Langwuzhuang (Dawu Group and 50 km from Xiong'an. Perhaps, more importantly for later developments involving Dawu Group, Langwuzhuang is only about 34 km from Xiong'an New Area or the future, legacy city of Xi Jinping.

Picture

During the summer there were two incidents involving land disputes between Dawu Group and Xushui State Farm which were of interest to those within The Great Firewall. They are termed the June 21st and August 4th incidents  “6.21事件”和 “8.4事件". Simply put, one may surmise that authorities were concerned how minor incidents might become catalysts for major disturbances during a pandemic. To express it another way, Zero tolerance for COVID-19 is mirrored in Zero tolerance for even minor, land disputes.

Seventeen years earlier, public speeches had been given by Sun Dawu in Beijing at both Peking University and China Agricultural University on March 13th and 14th of 2003 respectively.  They dealt with “The Pathetic State of Chinese Farmers” 《可怜的天下农民》and “A Voice From the Bottom — Eighteen Years Experiencing the Three Issues of Rural China”《来自底层的声音——十八年感受三农》.

It can be said that the speeches dealt with the general plight of farmers. The government criticized how the issues were expressed in a public forum. The government was also upset that similar viewpoints had been delivered earlier in a private forum at Zhongnanhai where they had invited the speaker to express his views to policy makers.

The government at the time was concerned how peace and harmony might be upset as the SARS crisis developed in 2003. Therefore, local authorities under direction of higher authorities decided to arrest Sun Dawu in order to nip in the bud any future,  speaking incidents either there or elsewhere before they spead and were magnified in intensity.

While the arrest of Sun Dawu in 2003 came by surprise it might be said that his arrest in 2020 was somewhat predicatable because of SARS-CoV-2;  afterall, land disputes are potentially much more volatile than speeches alone. There may be a couple thousand land disputes in any given year throughout China. They are basically a legacy of policies of The Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution.

To show how concerned the government was about the Omicron version of COVID-19  it "reframed" its plan for Xiong'an New Area (雄安新区). This was done on September 09, 2020 which is coincidentally two months before Sun Dawu's arrest at Langwuzhuang, Hebei.  Xiong'an's self-sufficient city would now consist of self-sufficient units. In doing so the goal was to create a "COVID proof city".

Picture

Anyone knowing the situation in health care services at the self-sufficient village of Langwuzhuang (郎五庄) might have thought the plan of a "COVID proof city" to be ridiculous if not ludicrous. Dawu Group had built a hospital of 17 floors for its nearly 10,000 employees. The emphasis was on first-class treatment. The monthly fee to employees was only 1 yuan (US$0.15) a month, so, basically it was subsidized by the Group. It was expanded to include residents of Langwuzhuang who were not employees. If there were a misdiagnosis then the patient would be financially compensated. In addition, one hundred medical staff had voluteered to go to the front lines of Wuhan during the COVID-19 crisis in March 2020---the CCP didn't want the help.

In general, the Dawu model of health care (which is part of a larger social protection network) is immensely successful. It is a model for all hospitals and could become a key cornerstone of socialism throughout China. What patients fear in China is not the disease, but the fees which can bankrupt them. What the government fears is the disease because it means potential loss of control. For example, Omicron's evolution is faster and potentially more pervasive than any planned revolution with respect to internet of things, 6G or AI.

Picture

Presumably, the reframing of Xiong'an as a "COVID proof city" of the future further strengthens China's COVID policy of Zero Tolerance. As the days go by, though, this policy seems to be more about control of the individual than the disease. It seems the "future" has arrived sooner than expected for the government. Xiong'an was locked down under "stealth martial law" at the end of January 2022 when five cases were recognized. Five cases of Omicron meant 1.2 million people were locked down for an indeterminate period.

In summary, Junwei Changfeng's observation of the perceptions of outsiders and insiders is valid. Generally speaking, "outsiders" beyond The Great Firewall are concerned about issues involving free speech in China (as they are in their own countries) while insiders in China who are faced with firewall restrictions are more  concerned with legacy land issues.  In contrast, issues concerning disease are more universal especially when they become world-wide pandemics as in the case of ASF and SARS or SARS-CoV-2.

Specifically, with regard to Sun Dawu, outsiders and insiders were more concerned about free speech in China both before and after his 2003 arrest.  Seventeen years later, "outsiders" continued to focus on free speech and secondarily on property bubble issues which have spread world-wide. Land issues and disputes arising from them became the dominant theme for Chinese "insiders". For example, minor land issues surfaced in two incidents at Langwuzhuang in the summer of 2020 which garnered national attention before Sun Dawu's arrest several months later.

In both 2003 and 2020, SARS and its mutated version called SARS-CoV-2 respectively had hit Beijing itself which alarmed the government because legacy land issues had not been solved throughout China and are now compounded by a related bubble in the property sector.  In other words, peasants and farmers have lost land to the property sector in the cities. To survive, the sector needs to acquire more land through dubious means and low compensation in order to maintain growth. It is a vicious cycle.

How China’s new ‘Covid-proof’ city paves the way for easier lockdowns
Xiong’an is being championed by President Xi Jinping as a ‘new standard’ for post-coronavirus era

Gabriel Power

September 09, 2020

The Chinese government is constructing a “Covid-proof” city designed to make the implementation of lockdown measures easier in future pandemics.
But the coronavirus pandemic has shifted the focus of the project, with architects commissioned to create “blocks of apartments that are equipped to allow residents to continue to function under lockdown conditions”, The Telegraph reports.
The coronavirus outbreak has seen Beijing reframing the project to accommodate pandemic-friendly apartments where residents can “live in style during lockdowns”, The Sun says.

It's more a "COVID poof" city rather than "COVID proof" city under the Omicron variant. Omicron rules. No wonder the COVID lockdown of Xiong'an on January 27, 2022 was kept so secret----so much for "reframing" Xiong'an as "pandemic friendly" back in September 2020.

China’s ‘city of the future’ has been under a secret COVID lockdown

GRADY MCGREGOR

January 28, 2022

The German outlet Die Zeit reported on Thursday that Xiong’an, a city of 1.3 million people less than an hour's drive away from Beijing, had gone into lockdown on Monday without any official government announcements, news reports, or pronouncements on social media.

"We expect this [lockdown] to last around a week, but the exact timing is uncertain," a government official said to AFP on Friday, confirming Xiong'an's lockdown.

Instead, authorities set up roadblocks in the city and told people that they had to go into home quarantine. Die Zeit reports that some city residents received messages on Monday from anonymous accounts on WeChat, a social messaging app, telling them that the city would be under lockdown for the next seven days.

But Xiong'an's growth may not prove as organic as cities like Shenzhen or Shanghai. Last year, the Financial Times reported that Chinese firms have been reluctant to move their offices there amid construction delays. Xiong'an's proximity to power players in Beijing may be a selling point for the city, but critics of the urban project also say the city is built on marshes and wasteland and has little hope of becoming an economic engine in China due to being far from the sea.

15/ Why has Xiong'an not announced its lockdown like any other Chinese city? It's too much of a face loss for Beijing, and especially Xi Jinping. So they rather play it sneaky - and bet on no one noticing it.

Chinese Cities in Lockdown as Police Warn People Not "to Spread" 'Rumors'

In Hebei's Xingtai city, the CCP issued a directive calling for donations from the private sector to support the healthcare industry during the pandemic.
A Jan. 10 directive signed by the CCP's United Front Work Department, which mobilizes support outside of the ruling party, called on local authorities in nearby Nangong city to "levy pandemic supplies from private entrepreneurs, including single beds, mattresses, quilts, pillows, buckets, medical waste bags, and so on."

Failed China ‘zero-COVID’ policy tops list of 2022 geopolitical risks: Eurasia Group

Jan. 3, 2022

The policy looked incredibly successful in 2020, but now has become a fight against a much more transmissible variant with broader lockdowns and vaccines with limited effectiveness, Bremmer and Kupchan wrote. “And the population has virtually no antibodies against Omicron. Keeping the country locked down for two years has now made it more risky to open it back up.”

That’s the opposite of where China’s leader, Xi Jinping, wants the country to be in the runup to his third term, but there’s nothing he can do about it, they said, arguing that the initial success of the zero-COVID policy and Xi’s personal attachment to it now makes it impossible to change course.

For the world, that means more supply-chain disruptions. “Shipping constraints, COVID-19 outbreaks, and shortages of staff, raw material, and equipment — all more acute because of China’s zero-Covid policy — will make goods less available,” they wrote. “High prices for shipping will also hurt small- and medium-sized businesses that don’t have the resources to book containers, let alone their own ships. Supply constraints should recede over the course of 2022, but disruptions will persist in many sectors. Midyear contract negotiations at major U.S. ports and related slowdowns will add to the difficulties.”

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/no-zero-covid-tops-list-of-2022-geopolitical-risks-eurasia-group-11641228457

I have always looked forward to Eurasia Group's yearly outlook with regard to China for "the shape of things to come" to quote H.G. Wells. This particular analysis seems to have the highest probability of occurence.

One of our leaders who has historically paid close attention to Ian Bremmer of Eurasia Group was Chrystia Freeland. This year she may be more interested in the Ukraine rather than China.

It was the Delta variant that hit Xian. However, at least two cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in both Tianjin and Anyang. With the start of the winter Olympics (February 4 - 20) and the Chinese New Year (February 1 - 15)  it may be a perfect storm for the spread of Omicron in China. Already 20 million people are under lockdown.

At Spring Festival in 2020, the  city of Wuhan, Hunan went ahead with a giant banquet called Baibuting of 10,000 people (January 26, 2020) to beat a Guiness Book World Record. It appears that Beijing will go ahead with the Beijing Olympics of 2022 as a showcase to the world. Both events have sanctioned mass gatherings as long as it is done by an organ of the State or the State itself in order to be perceived by the world and the Chinese as the biggest and best.

Yet, in 2021 - 2022, cities are forced by the State to lockdown and declare martial law if a single case of COVID-19 is detected. The terms "duplicity" and "hypocrisy" seem to describe the situation. Do you really believe that the Chinese government is going to lockdown the Olympics if a single case of COVID-19 is detected at the Games? In the Guiness Book or at the Olympic Games it is Omicron which sets all records for its exponential growth. Omicron wears the crown.

The Global Public Health Intelligence Network (GPHIN) was set up as a global network of connected professionals working to rapidly detect, identify, assess, prevent and mitigate threats to human health. GPHIN is managed by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s (PHAC) Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response (CEPR), which was created in July 2000. The network was disbanded in May 2019.

Curiously, an exact date is not given in public records. To me this is not an oversight. It is rather a deliberate omission to obfuscate an issue.

PHAC would have us believe that the network slowly wound down over the years until it just ceased to exist in the manner in which old soldiers just fade away. It also tried to give the impression that a domestic agenda superceded an international one. However, global pandemics almost by definition become domestic agendas.

What the author would like to know is if PHAC became aware in May 2019 of the emergence of a coronavirus in Wuhan? Through a multilingual GPHIN System which was developed in collaboration with the National Research Council Canada (NRC)--under the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development--it was undertaking text analytics of Chinese news. Did PHAC detect the emergence of a coronvirus in Wuhan which led to the dismantlement of the system? Did this ultimately lead to the removal of Dr. Qiu Xiangguo and her husband Cheng Keding and up to 15 students for "administrative matters" from the National Microbiology Institute in Winnipeg Canada on July 5, 2019?

Dr. Qiu had close ties with the Level 4 lab of the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan. "She sent one of the deadliest viruses on Earth [Ebola], and multiple varieties of it to maximize the genetic diversity and maximize what experimenters in China could do with it, to a laboratory in China that does dangerous gain of function experiments. It has links to the Chinese military"1. She also sent them Nipah viruses.

WHO scientist wants closer look at Wuhan lab that moved days before COVID-19 outbreak

New York Post

By Natalie O'Neill

August 13, 2021 4:46pm Updated

A Wuhan lab that was quietly moved by Chinese officials in December 2019 — drawing scrutiny from a World Health Organization scientist — operated under a mild safety level protocol where workers weren’t necessarily required to wear masks, officials said in reports.

At least one employee of the Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention facility — different than the city’s much-discussed Wuhan Institute of Virology — tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies due to “a family cluster transmission,” though it’s unclear when the tests were conducted, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a World Health Organization report.

The lab, where Chinese scientists research mild human diseases with bats, was moved near the seafood market where the first COVID-19 cases were found just days before the outbreak, WHO investigators said.

The revelation comes as Dr. Ben Embarek, the Danish head of a WHO-led team of investigators that probe the viruses’ origins, said in an interview this week that more information is needed about the lab’s move.

“It’s interesting that the lab relocated on the 2nd of December 2019: That’s the period where it all started,” Embarek, a food safety and animal diseases expert, said in a documentary that aired on the Danish television channel TV2.

“We know that when you move a lab, it disturbs everything…That entire procedure is always a disruptive element in the daily work routine of a lab,” he said.

https://nypost.com/2021/08/13/who-scientist-eyes-on-wuhan-lab-that-moved-before-pandemic/

The Wuhan CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) was a separate lab from the Wuhan Virology Institute. They were both located closely together in a less populous area.  The Wuhan CDC  was a  level 2 lab with lower security level  than the level 4 biohazard lab of the Wuhan Virology Institute which handled  the most dangerous viruses.

Why was the Wuhan CDC Level 2 Institute moved on December 2, 2019?   There is some circumstantial evidence in terms of satellite surveillance of hospital parking lots that there was something unusual going on as early as mid-November with respect to attendance and/or admittance at the hospitals.  This may have been due to what became known as COVID-19.

Why was the Wuhan CDC Level 2 Institute moved to its present location in Wuhan. The answer is that it is closer to the Wet Market. One may assume that both purchases and sales of live animals were done at the market.

It is difficult to undertand though why the CDC Level 2 Institute was moved to a high density location in terms of population rather than to a more remote area. It couldn't be solely because of close proximity to a Wet Market for sake of convenience. One may conjecture that it was where there were more medical facilities with isolation units to handle an outbreak of COVID-19 which had already begun.

Would the relationship between the Wuhan CDC Level 2 Institute and the Wuhan Virology Institute have necessitated a move? This is a distinct possibility if the move was intended to curtail or cut-off the spread of a virus from a Level 2 to a Level 4 facility.  One may assume that safety procedures at the Level 4 facility were were intensified even if procedures at the Level 2 facility may have been temporarily compromised in a potentially unplanned and quick move to downtown Wuhan.  It may be also that the Level 2 facility was designated as the sole institution to contact with the Wet Market.

Canadian author Elaine Dewar’s book raises troubling questions about the origins of COVID-19

September 10, 2021

Marsha Lederman

by Windsor, Ont.-based publisher Biblioasis, the book reads almost like a detective novel.

Ultimately, mainstream publications began to report seriously about the lab theory. Were you thinking that from the beginning?

I’m not sure what I was thinking until I began to understand that some of the [scientific] publications were quite deceptive and that really set the hair up on the back of my neck. [One Chinese scientist submitted two papers with different information to different science journals on the same day]. I mean, when I hit upon that, I was just gobsmacked. Because there’s no possibility that you can publish two papers saying quite different things on the same day, and allow those two papers to continue to circulate, without any reference back and forth between them.

                                             人类病毒

                                        Human Virome

Telecommunication executives in China will be subject to rectification or correction which has a retributive aspect unless they self-educate themselves to censor informational chaos through rules and restrictions which in turn threaten rectification to their customers who may neglect to re-examine and re-educate themselves through self analysis. It is literally a chain of rectification. In layman's terms, it simply means don't criticize the government.

We are led to believe that stricter controls are a natural outcome of the situation after the COVID-19 outbreak. Clearly, the author needs more introspection to believe it is a natural outcome rather than a power play. It is difficult to be in-line with either One Thought policy of Socialism with Chinese characteristics or with No Thought of a Minority Government of One in Canada which wishes to extend its authoritarian socialist mandate. Frankly, the introspection results in cognitve dissonance and short-circuiting of synaptical connections.

The author is aware that his body is composed of bacteria and viruses. His gut instinct is that he must be defined by bacteria. There are up to 500 in his gut. However, on second self-examination--over a period of minutes--he is convinced the answer is viruses. In nature, viruses outnumber bacteria by 10-1. He has a unique "human virome" and it constantly changes. That means he must spend every minute if not every second of his life at self-examination. How he has time to do anything else except self-examination to avoid rectification is beyond his limited knowledge or ability.

Any self-examinatiion must start with definition. In this case, it must begin with the definition of "human virome". It is the total collection of viruses in and on the human body. His viruses are rapidly evolving and his human virome is quite dynamic. It seems rather chaotic. He will have to brush up on the technique of deep sequencing. Maybe he'll throw in a little ultradeep and a bit of transcritome sequencing.

Normally, he would look outside of himself to understand about viruses. For example, he would seek the advice of scientists at the Wuhan Institutue of Virology. Their scientists are experts on coronavirues at the Biosafety Level 4 Lab. In particular, they have extensive experience with bat viruses that can cause SARS-like coronaviruses with the potential for human transmission. Their avowed mission is to prevent future epidemics and not cause epidemics perhaps through lax security standards as some have claimed. However, while security standards may have been lax; nevertheless, secrecy is drum tight so consultation with experts is difficult. Let's be unbiased. One may say the same thing about the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, Canada--especially with the Qiu revelations.

Therefore, more self-examination is required for a person to understand himself/herself. It is rather ironical that while the threat of rectification is intended to induce compliance with one point of view in order to establish harmony its effect may be the opposite. One may realize that one's own human virome is unique and therefore the individual is unique. It seems rather chaotic to have 1.4 billion Chinese come to the self-realization that they have a unique human virome.

As a result of his newly discovered individuality, the author wonders if he was exposed to SARS when he lived in Beijing at the time of the SARS pandemic in 2003. He lived right across from a restaurant which was newly converted to a SARS hospital. He will have to search within himself for the RNA genome of SARS-HCoV.

He wonders (to himself only) why Canadian health experts didn't remember in 2020 how easily SARS spread from Beijing to Toronto in February 2003. Patient Zero was a woman who booked into the Metropole Hotel in Hong Kong and then returned to her home in Toronto. Severe acute respiratory syndrome killed 44 Canadians. Forty-four is a very unlucky number for Chinese. It became a more unlucky number for the Canadians who died.

Furthermore, he asks himself in an effort of self-discovery why Ottawa would dismantle the early pandemic warning system called Global Public Health Intelligence Network or GPHIN? It was set-up in 1997. The early warning system was cancelled on May 24, 2019 or two weeks before Dr. QIU Xiangguo was escorted out of the Level 4 Security section of the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) in Winnipeg. She had made at least five trips to the Wuhan National Biosafety Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences between 2017-2018, which was certified for BSL4 in January 2017. While she had been in Canada for 23 years it is somewhat murky if she were classified as a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a Chinese national.

It is commonly hyped that GPHIN ceased to exist "less than a year before the COVID-19 pandemic began". However, self-analysis through Jungian depth psychology reveals to the author that it was less than six months after Dr. Qiu was escorted out of the lab for breach of protocol before the discovery of a SARS-like coronavirus on December 30, 2019 at 7:00 pm. That was the exact time at which samples arrived at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Historically, GPHIN I had detected that something was going on in China with regard to infectious diseases. Dr. Ron St. John, Director General, Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response with the Public Health Agency of Canada reported that in late 2002 and early 2003 an influenza or early SARS was detected in China. However, he said that it was a new disease for which there was no test. From this system GPHIN II developed which gathers and disseminates data in a "real-time, 24/7" basis.

If authorities were to self-examine themselves regarding decisions they made regarding dismantlement of early warning virus detection systems they might ask the following. Was the decision to end GPHIN linked to the dismantling of Predict? The Trump administration cut funding for Predict which had identified 160 different viruses that had the potential to develop into pandemics. It was run by the US Agency for International Development which had instituted the program in 2009. The program was terminated in September 2019 just three months before it was believed COVID-19 began infecting people in Wuhan, Hubei.

Of course, authorites will say they cut programs to cut costs. However, it almost seems that with cancellation of programs so close together in time they may have been aware of what might transpire. Cancellations meant an absence of evidence which would allow for plausible deniability. For example, did US authorites know before September 2019 that a US Harvard professor allegedly became a Strategic Scientist beginning in 2011 at Wuhan University of Technology in China? In Canada, the early warning system was disbanded two weeks before Dr. Qiu, her husband and her students were escorted out of the Level 4 Lab in Winnipeg. CBC News reported that one of the scientists was "responsible for exporting [Ebola and Henipah] pathogens to the Wuhan Institute of Virology" some four months before July 5, 2019 or the day of expulsion. Do these incidents exhibit coincidence or rather correspondence?

The Chinese early warning system for infectious diseases was established in 2004. It is called the National Notifiable Disease Reporting System (NNDRS) which is operated by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to Manoj Harjani who is a Research Fellow with Future Issues and Technology "China’s early warning system may have been hampered by its reliance on case information obtained after diagnosis rather than analysis of pre-diagnosis risk factors." One thinks of the expression "Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted".

Recently, according to a report in the British Medical Journal dated October 26, 2020, there is a call for a national intelligent syndromic surveillance system (NISSS) in China. It would incorporate real-time data to forecast an epidemic accurately and robustly in order to guide the epidemic control and prevention work. One wonders how much NISSS resembles GPHIN II?

The author's self-examination should not exclude SARS-CoV-2. In February, he self-isolated for three weeks with severe bronchitis and pneumonia at least as they were discoverable through his self-diagnosis. Obviously, it will be necessary as part of his self-examination to administer to himself the SARS-CoV-2 Nucleic-acid Amplification Test. That will tell him whether or not he has had COVID-19.

In summary, self-examination has taught the author that he is a collection of viruses. He may have had SARS-HCoV which originated in Guangzhou, Guangdong. He probably had SARS-CoV-2 which originated in Wuhan, Hubei. He has received many Chinese vaccines over the last three decades. His unique human virome is more Chinese than he thought it was. Indeed, he is not what he eats, but rather the viruses to which he has been exposed.

In the early morning of February 7, China's powerful Internet censorship agencies felt a strange and deep anxiety. They feel that they are losing control.

News of Li Wenliang's death from the new crown spread quickly. The doctor had warned of a strange new virus outbreak, but was reprimanded by the police and accused of spreading rumors. Grief and anger spread on social media. For people at home and abroad, the death of Li Wenliang shows the terrible cost of the Chinese government's instinct to suppress negative information.

李文亮是福建省厦门市D.Carlton Rossi的眼科医生,之后搬到湖北省武汉市

李文亮 was the ophthalmologist of D.Carlton Rossi in Xiamen,Fujian Province prior to his move to Wuhan, Hubei Province

While Li Wenliang may be most closely associated with the city of Wuhan because he graduated as an opthamologist from its university and later returned to work and establish a family in Wuhan while finally acting as a whistleblower in the coronavirus crisis; nevertheless, he worked in Xiamen, Fujian Province for several years. Specifically, he worked at the the Xiamen Eye Center of Xiamen University (厦门大学厦门眼科中心).

The first Chinese eyechart which is otherwise a poem was designed by D. Carlton Rossi and presented to Dr. Li by D.Carlton Rossi. The chart is called Mountain over Mountain (in translation).

However, one should note that there is a second version of this "poem".  It resembles an inverted Wasp Nest inspired by Dante's Inferno.

Social Unrest and COVID-19

Let me point out the obvious which is unrecognized by most. Sun Dawu (孙大午) was detained during the COVID-19 pandemic by Baoding police in Xushui county of Baoding, Hebei Province. It is true that the spread of the virus had subsided in China itself by the time of his arrest on November 11, 2020; however, it was only several months after martial law had been declared in Baoding on June 15, 2020. The city was under martial law due to an outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 quite far away in Xinfadi which had spread to Beijing. It seems it was an existentialist crisis only in Baoding because of trading ties with the market in Xinfadi which has the largest trading volume in Asia.

Were Baoding officials really more concerned about a decades' old land dispute in Langwuzhuang at Sun's village between Dawu Group and Xushui State Farm? It may be so because on June 21, 2020 personnel from both groups clashed. A dispute broke out again on August 04, 2020 when the state-farm personnel allegedly tried to demolish the Dawu office in the middle of the night. The incident left 20 people injured. The point is that Xushui and Baoding officials tend to overeact to any kind of social unrest at the time of a pandemic because it is perceived to be able to potentially spark greater discontent over a wider area.

Another obvious observation is that Sun was arrested on May 27, 2003 at the height of the SARS crisis which had hit the capital of Beijing quite hard. Previous to the author's house arrest on that date he had lived for several months right across from an improvised hospital set-up to treat SARS patients. In order to enter the village to establish a college in the Fall the author had to undergo a whole series of tests including X-rays, blood tests and temperature scans to prove he was not infected. Until Sun's arrest though the police had been unaware of his presence at the village.

The author wishes also to bring to the reader's attention the importance of the date of November 11, 2020 which is known as Remembrance Day in the West. Sun had reason to remember the anniversary of that date for another reason. It was the seventeenth anniversary of the verdict of his trial. It is without doubt that he was arrested on November 11, 2020 because it is the date of that anniversary. It was a clear message to Sun. Dawu Group was taken over in 2020 as it had been in 2003.

Picture

You can be sure that 50 million farmers who have had land confiscated with little compensation paid attention to the plight of Dawu Group and Sun Dawu. Sun's case strikes a chord or should one say discord among them. The plight of Sun and Dawu Group has brought land reform to the forefront as a national issue.

When Sun was arrested he was called a pig farmer. Why is that because only one of 28 subsidiaries was involved with a pig farm and it was closer to the capital than Langwuzhuang? The reason is that Sun gained international notoriety for whistleblowing about the Swine Flu epidemic in Hebei Province. He lost 15,000 pigs even though Hebei Province did not admit to any other clusters, so how did it spread to his farm if it wasn't more prevalent? The provincial government didn't like questions like that. They were also worried about unrest among farmers who owned millions of pig farms throughout China and higher pork prices that consumers had to pay. Sun wasn't allowed to make any more comments after February 22, 2019 on his blog at  http://sundawu1.blog.sohu.com/.

Picture
Wuhan-COVID-19 HIV-

COVID-19 began in Wuhan about mid-December. From January 23rd to April 8th or 76 days it was under shutdown or lockdown to contain the disease. What else is Wuhan known for aside from a transportation hub where bullet trains can take troops in a matter of hours to any point of insurrection on the frontiers?  The Xinhai Revolution began there in 1911 which overthrew the Qing Dynasty.  Earlier discontent has erupted in Sichuan Province when two privately owned railways were nationalized or taken over by the government.

Picture
Manchurian Plague 1910-1911

One factor that set the stage for the revolution was The Great Manchurian Plague that broke out across northeastern China in 1910. It was suppressed in the following year after 63,000 people had died from pneumonic plague. It was probably carried on the rail line by the Tarbagan marmot from the steppes around Khukh Lake, Mongolia to Harbin. It also travelled by rail from Beijing to Wuhan. The last Qing Emperor or Puyi (溥儀) was known as  Khevt Yos Khaan in Mongolia until his abdication.

It appears that Baoding overreacted to two cases of COVID-19 by declaring martial law. A male from Baoding who worked as a driver and purchasing agent at the seafood market of Xinfadi where he lived showed symptoms on June 6. A vendor at the market from Baoding who lived at the market showed symptoms on June 10. It begs the question why did Baoding declare martial law because of only two individuals in Xinfadi outside of Beijing and Wuhan didn't when the locals  claim 42,000 died from the epidemic? It seems that authorities in Wuhan wanted to give the impression that the situation was under control with lockdown while those in Baoding wanted to exaggerate the situation by declaring martial law because they are concerned about losing control in matters other than the virus.

The Baibuting Banquet

《静观天灾人祸》

《Watching the Scourge》

A plague moved with sorrow, and asked nothing about the natural disaster! If the virus is self-inflicting, who will punish the spread through the world? The descendants of Qin never regretted it, referring to the deer destroying the abutment for the horse. The Chinese people are waiting forward, and anti-corruption bears fruit!

《静观天灾人祸》

One might begin the story of the Baibuting Banquet with a dinner party of 20 participants in the city of Xiamen in terms of contrast. It was an open meeting of activists and rights lawyers on December 13, 2019 in order to discuss administrative issues. It aroused the suspicions of authorities as any dinner party with more than five guests is subject to scrutiny and could be considered unlawful. Several participants were arrested and an arrest warrant was put out for XU Zhiyong (许志永).

Xu was the founder of The New Citizens' Movement (新公民運動). It promoted "political transformation leading to democratic rule of law, as well as a cultural movement for the renewal of political and cultural traditions". Xu was able to avoid arrest for two months while on the run. In his last post written on February 14, 2020 (or the day before his arrest) he wrote "This nationwide calamity could only happen without democracy and freedom of speech,". "While the public are distressed for Dr. Li and their country, the Communist Party hides in the shadows and acts as eyes and ears. In their hearts, there is no right and wrong, no conscience, no bottom line, no humanity."

On the other hand, the Baibuting Banquet was held for the twentieth time on January 18, 2020 in the Jiangan District of Wuhan. This district borders the Jianghan District within which may be found the The Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market (武汉华南海鲜批发市场). The geographical closeness of the districts is mentioned because participants in the banquet might prepare their dishes from food found at the seafood market. In fact, the more exotic the ingredients then the more likely it would qualify for an original dish. The market was known more for its exotic, wild animals (which have now been banned for sale across China) than for its seafood.

The mayor of Wuhan was Zhou Xianwang (周先旺). Of course, he is not freely elected by the populace, but his power derives from his role as Deputy Party Committee Secretary. Zhou wanted to set a Guiness world record with the number of dishes and participants at the Baibuting Banquet. As a matter of fact, 40,000 families attended the banquet to break the record.

Three days before the banquet an organizing committee warned Zhou that a virus had been spreading in Wuhan. From his own sources he had been apprised of the cases and situation. The Deputy Party Committee Secretary said there is not enough warning and the event would continue. He becomes a figure like Trimalchio or "Thrice King" from Petronius' Satyricon who "in his drunken showiness leads to the entire household acting out his funeral, all for his own amusement and egotism."

Both Zhou and his superior Ma Guoqiang (马国强) who was Deputy Communist Party Secretary of Hubei and Communist Party Secretary of Wuhan were removed from office for dereliction of duty. Ma was removed on February 13, 2020. This was a day before Xu Zhiyong's defence of Li Wenliang (李文亮) in terms of freedom of speech.

There are currently three possible sources of transmission for COVID-19 which may be related. The first and foremost is the Wuhan Institute of Virology or WIV (中国科学院武汉病毒研究所) located in the Jingxia District which has China's only Biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) facility. The institute experiments on coronavirus genes. A team led by Shi Zhengli were the first to identify, analyze and name the genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) on behalf of WIV which applied for a patent in China for the use of Remdesivir--an experimental drug owned by Gilead Sciences. The team denies that COVID-19 which has unusual mutated genes of Ebola and HIV was designed by and leaked from the lab. It is conceivable perhaps that monkeys experimented upon might have been sold to the Wuhan Seafood Market.

The second possible source of transmission of COVID-19 was the Wuhan Seafood Market (武汉华南海鲜批发市场) of Jianghan District. While it sells seafood its notoriety and now one may say infamy stems from the sale of exotic, wild animals. Many of the first cases including those reported by Dr. Li Wenliang may have originated from the market.

Finally, the Wuhan Jiangan District Baibuting Community held its 20th annual food fest or banquet on January 18, 2020 which was just prior to the Spring Festival beginning on January 25, 2020. It is speculated that many of the 13986 entrants who submitted dishes may have visited the Wuhan Seafood Market to secure food. Over 40,000 families or more than 130,000 people participated in the event. It so happens that family units became the fastest way to transmit the virus. As a result, the Baibuting Residential Community in Jiangan District was hit hardest by COVID-I9.

It is said that a virus like that which causes the common cold or influenza doesn't want to kill its host, but rather to replicate or reproduce itself in other hosts. The same can be said of COVID-19. Its defining characteristic is its ability to infect rather than do away with its host. However, the virus can be quite lethal because it has mutated genes of Ebola and HIV which affects a small percentage of the population. This means the more people the virus infects the greater the number of those who succumb to it.

One might think of containment as a crude method to control a coronavirus. It may be happenstance or designed. For example, the purpose of a cruise ship is to provide a sense of luxury and leisure. However, by containing the virus like COVID-19 to a small area with improper quarantine methods leads by happenstance to a high fatality rate among older passengers who may not have before been in the best of health. That explains why on the Diamond Princess ship there were six fatalities among the 705 reported cases.

In a similar way, apartment buildings in the Baibuting Residential Area were built for the well-being of their residents. However, if older residents who were weak in body or health are forcibly contained in a building which was not intended to be a closed environment then the number of fatal cases increases. Perhaps only one in five people of a family of the banquet for families was infected with the coronavirus in an open environment such as the banquet itself or seafood market. However, when authorities improperly quarantine the family within their apartment inside a quaranteened apartment building then the fatality rate rises. This was the case throughout the Baibuting Residential area. In a more general sense, it applies to the quaranteened city of Wuhan, too.

AI, 5G, facial recognition, Smart City and Social Credit System were designed to control a population of 1.4 billion people. One might say that combined they form a grand scale re-education program. If control of an individual(s) is difficult then these technologies resort to containment and isolation.

While technologies such as facial recognition of people were not intended to control viruses such as African Swine Flu (ASF); nevertheless, they were employed on large, industrial farms of swine. The idea was to identify sick pigs by facial recognition and behaviour so that they could be culled before they infected the herd--in other words containment and isolation. The main problem with this approach is that the presence of only one pig can infect a herd of 1 million. The result was that it didn't reduce the spread of ASF in China.

These so-called smart technologies were also employed to control the spread of COVID-19 with mutated Ebola and HIV genes. Again, they were not designed to deal with a novel coronavirus which was most probably engineered in a secret,  Biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) facility in Wuhan under the aegis of the military. None of these technologies can detect the invisible, so to speak. The incubation period for COVID-19 varies from about 5 days to perhaps 21 days. Furthermore, some cases are asymptomatic meaning they present no symptoms of disease at any stage. This means that even if one case is missed then it can infect an entire population. The attempts by authorities to Red Flag individuals who show unusual patterns of behaviour (as recognized by technologies designed for another purpose) in order to contain and isolate them are bound to fail. These technologies only give the appearance of authority in order to justify what may be application of arbitrary standards to contain and isolate. They do not reduce the spread of COVID-19 in China.

Residents of the Baibuting Residential Community were particularly hard hit since many had been at the 'Ten Thousand Family Banquet'. The local hospital was full. Some patients were quarantined at a hotel. Many others were quarantined in local compounds; for example, Anju, Lily, Yikang and Kanghe. Finally, all Wuhan was forcibly contained so what ended up was containment within containment. The peoples' cries for help go unheeded. All they can do for now about the corruption is watch the scourge. Vice wears a virus crown. The thrice king crowned for life wears a corona.
